Silverfast Color Management Setup

Postby jho » Sun Aug 03, 2008 3:32 am

Good evening,

I am new to this board, recently I just purchased am Epson Perfection V750 Pro and Silverfast Ai and performed IT8 calibration with Lasersoft IT8 target.

Everything seems to work fine; however, I encountered a few minor issues. I would like your advise whether I'm approaching my Silverfast Ai/Photoshop/MacPro correctly.

System Configuration:
Scanner: Epson Perfection V750 Pro
Software: Photoshop CS3
Platform: Apple OS X Leopard Ver 10.5.4

Silverfast Ai Frame Setting:
Scan Type: 48 bit HDR Color
Screen: 4800 dpi

I have calibrated my monitor and created a profile called “Monitor_Spyder2 Pro”. In Photoshop CS3, I defined the RGB workspace as AdobeRGB1998 and in Silverfast General Options (CMS tab) as follows:

CMS (Color Management):
Input->Internal <ColorSync>
Monitor <ColorSync> (The “Automatic” is grayed out)
Internal->Output <RGB>

CMS (Profiles for ColorSync):
Scanner (Reflective): <RF_R Epson Perfection V750)>
Scanner (Transparaent): <Perfection V700 Film> (This option is grayed out too)
Internal: AdobeRGB1998.icc
Gray: <Generic Gray Profile.icc>
Output/Printer: <NONE>
Rendering Intent: <perceptual>

CMS (Embedded ICC profiles):
Embed ICC profile: CHECKED
Profile to embed: <RF_R Epson Perfection V750)> (Keep defaulting to this and would not allow me to change to “AdobeRGB1998.icc)

QUESTIONS:

1) Are these the right CMS choices--is there anything that should be changed?

2) Why is the “Automatic” option in CMS -> Monitor greyed out? How can I pick the “Monitor_Spyder2 Pro” that I have created?

3) I have the embed icc profile checked. Why does it keep defaulting to “RF_R Epson Perfection V750.icc profile? How do I change it AdobeRGB1998.icc because it would not let me change or add to the “Profile to embed field?

I appreciated the help and response. Thank You,

Dear jho,
let me answer your Questions:

1):
You made good choices in the CMS, everything looks okay !

2):
Automatic is only available if using later versions of Photoshop for scanning. Its there to keep Photoshop & SilverFast settings in-sync.
As long as you work with the standalone approach ( the Launcher ) you don't have to worry about this, i'd prefer the standalone approach.

3):
This is okay as you choose HDR Output. This Output is a kind of archival mode where the data is unchanged aka "raw".
As the data is NOT converted from EPSON Scanner colorspace to Adobe Colorspace in the output file, it would be wrong to embed the Adobe RGB profile.
This will be done if you choose 48 Color or 48->24 Colr Modes.
If you scan in HDR the RGB is still "EPSON Scanner flavor" and so we embed the scanner profile.

I hope that helped :-)

Nils Heidorn

I don't appear to have an IT8 colour chart with my scanner.

Can i download it from somewhere?

Dear pioneer,

you can not download an IT8 Chart as it needs to be measured.
You can order these Charts from our Webshop, and only our charts feature the patented single click Auto IT8 calibration.
