We have an Epson 1640XL and recently purchased the optional automatic document feeder to begin archiving old documents here at my university.
Until now, we've been manually scanning old documents with the Epson scanner driver and everything has been working fine. However, the Epson software automatically crops non-standard page sizes to a standard page size when using the document feeder. The pages we're scanning are 8.5" x 12" and it crops them to 8.5" x 11", which is unacceptable.
Now, we've begun investigating other software that will hopefully allow us to scan the whole page. First I tried v**s**n, and it worked okay when manually scanning, but wouldn't drive the ADF, simply saying "Scanner not Ready" when I tried to use it. The author will not get back to me regarding this problem.
So I dug back through the software that came with the scanner and found a copy of SilverFast Ai 5. From reading the manual, it looks promising, but I cannot get it to see the scanner. Apple System Profiler can see the scanner, whether it is connected via USB or FireWire, but SilverFast reports that no scanner was found.
I tried installing the included version on OS 9 and it wouldn't work, as well as the Silverfast 6 demo on OS X.
I'd really appreciate any help that you can offer, because we have a $1300 document feeder sitting here, useless.
Thanks,
Adam
