sf se5.5.0r01(bundled) and 2450 locks on Win2000 pro

Using Photoshop Elements and SF SE 5.5.0r01 with Epson 2450 on Win 2000 Pro I can only scan once. The next scan locks the application and the scanner stops in mid scan position. I must terminate the non responding application and turn off the scanner. I start everything again and can only scan once then again locks up. Ver 6 demo works fine BUT I have to pay additional for something that should work as purchased. Where can I get the latest version 5.5 update? Or do I return the entire purchase?

On my windows 2000 machine using Scsi, the AI 6 hangs at the end of the prescan. This happens everytime even on the first try. Silverfast SE 5 that came with the scanner works perfectly.
