Problems scanning at maximum dpi

Postby KIN413 » Thu Feb 06, 2003 3:38 am

My scanner is the Epson 2450 and I am using Windows XP, 640 mb memory, Elements 1, and Silverfast Ai version 6.0.1d32b demo. When I try to scan at maximum dpi and, for example, set the size of the output at 12 x 18 (inches), Silverfast reduces the size of the output to something below a 145 mb file size. It will never let me establish settings that will produce a file size larger than approx. 145 mb. One of the other twains that came with the scanner will allow me to establish settings that produce a file size of approx. 800 mb. Where is my roadblock?? I am unable to do high resolution scans with Silverfast.

No, I have not tried filter descreening. I am unfamiliar with filter descreening, but will see if I can alter my results with it.

The problem is in the descreening. If you select descreening or USM & descreening, the max resolution is limited by the double of the descreening value. That changes the scale/resolution.

The number of columns is limited. It should not depend on the filtering. Therefore, you cannot scan very wide images at full resolution. The reason is historical. Indeed, the size of the images loaded in Photoshop was originally limited.

Where do I find the setting for filter descreening. Is it in Photoshop or the silverfast scanning system?? I am unfamiliar with it.

Have a look at these tutorials or reviews about SilverFast:

http://www.silverfast.com/show/sf-onlin ... ws/en.html

You'll get some info about descreening at:

http://www.computer-darkroom.com/sf5-ne ... uction.htm

Before the arrival of GANE (grain & noise removal tool), some SF users utilized the descreening filter to remove grain, and maybe still do it :)

Filter is set to "more auto sharp +." I see where descreening is now. It has always been set to "more auto sharp+." One of the twains that came with Photoshop will allow a file size up to 900 mb. It is not as good of scanning software as silverfast. The largest file size I get is around 270MB with silverfast. The higher the scan resolution, the smaller it makes the output size. Will it help if I upgrade to Photoshop version 2 (from v1) or if I went to the full Photoshop?? Is it limited by the available hard disk space?? I have about 3 or 4 gb of disk space available.
