Photoshop CS3 crashes with SilverFast Ai

Postby rwittler » Fri Apr 27, 2007 4:52 pm

I have an Epson V750 scanner and a macintosh computer with OS 10.4. It was working fine with Silverfast Ai (version 6.4.4r7A) and Photoshop CS2. I recently upgraded to Photoshop CS3 and I can open up Silverfast but when the scan is complete Photoshop immediately quits. I have tried websupport but I have not received a reply after 3 days. Is the current version of Silverfast incompatible with photoshop CS3?

Hi Bob,

Are you using the twain acquire for SilverFast or the freestanding SilverFast? I have had some problems when using twain acquire (calling SilverFast from within PS.)

To simplify my workflow, I always use the freestanding SilverFast in batch mode to create my scans, exit SilverFast and then do my work in PS. Much of my printing I do outside of PS using a RIP, so I exit PS for printing. This keeps quite a bit of memory free by not running all three programs concurrently.

My experience is with WinXP, but I like to block out my workflow in this manner" Scan, process, print.

I was using it from within Photoshop CS3. I got a reply from LaserSoft support today and they told me I needed to upgrade to SilverFast Ai Studio. So I did that (for $154) and the problem was not solved. I also noticed there was no multiexposure although I thought the Epson V750 was supported for multiexposure with the new SilverFast version.

I solved the problem of Photoshop CS3 crashing by upgrading the version of Ai Studio to 4.5 as purchasing the upgrade and re-serializing did not give me the latest version. I still don't seem to have multi-exposure however. I seem to have paid the $154 just to be able to use SilverFast in Photoshop CS3.

Bob,

I had a similar problem when I upgraded. It took some assistance from tech support to completely clear out all of the old versions and give me all of the features of the 6.5. You should plan on re-profiling your scanner when it finally is working with all of the features.

I bet within a few working days, they will have you up and running with MEX. It is a shame you cannot simply upgrade like most programs and have the full benefits immediately, but eventually you will.

Dear all,
could you please give us some more info:

Which Mac do you use, which CS3 do you use ( Preview Version xxx ?! ).
Which size is the scan that fails and which resolution or doesn't it matter at all ?

Greetings,

I am using Photoshop CS3 (10.0) and Mac OS 10.4.9 with an Epson V750 Pro scanner. As noted above by upgrading to the latest version of SilverFast Ai Studio I can now use SilverFast in Photoshop CS3 to do single scans. However the program freezes if I attempt to do batch scans.

Dear rwittler,
could you specify which Mac exactly ( Mac Pro or G4 or G5 or ... ) you use which how much RAM ?

If you do a batch scan, does SilverFast crash at the first image or second or later ?!
Is it always the same or seemingly random ?

Please also let us know if it is a *final* Release Version of CS3 or a Preview Release..

Thank you for those details :-)

It is a dual 2.7 GHz G5 with 4 gigabytes of RAM. It consistently freezes with the second scan (only doing two scans) from within Photoshop CS3. I am using the final release version of Photoshop CS3.

I can still do batch scans in Photoshop CS2 although I have noticed that since upgrading to SilverFast Ai Studio 6.5 Photoshop CS2 will also occasionally (maybe 15% of the time) crash right after the two scans are completed and this did not happen prior to upgrading SilverFast.

Hi Bob,
in the meanwhile we were able to duplicate this bug and could fix it. After a few outstanding tests we will post a new SilverFast installer on the web site. The SilverFast version will stay the same (6.5.0r6) - just the date of the installer will change (May 15th or 16th, 2007). Please check our website for the update later to day.

Berthold
LaserSoft Imaging AG

Please note: Only SilverFast version 6.5.0r5 (actually 6.5.0r6 from May 15th and later) will support Photoshop CS3!
