Everyone...

The day has arrived! I just downloaded Epson Scan-to-File Beta- http://www.epsondevelopers.com/macscan/scantofile.jsp -and SilverFast AI 5.5.2r11 Updater from here...my Perfection 2450 scanner works in USB mode in OS 10.1.4 with Photoshop 7!

No FireWire connectvity yet, speed via USB is slow, but better than switching to OS 9 to scan!

Install the Epson TWAIN driver from the Scan-to-File download. Then install SilverFast and voila! The plug-in works under Photoshop 7 and the stand-alone application works as well!

I haven't tried all the functionality yet...will keep you posted.

Hooray!

Cory

Cory, I have the same set-up, OS 10.1.4, Epson Perfection 2450 and Photoshop 7, saw at VersionTracker via MacFixit that Silverfast Ai 5.5.2d10 was now available. This version must pre-date the 5.5.2r11 version you got? Also, I wasn't sure about plugin capability. From what I can gather from the LaserSoft site, the integrated Plugin is coming?

Meanwhile, back at Apple, I suspect that OS 10.5 is in the works, and it might be back to the drawing board for printer and scanner drivers!

By the way, I saw a press release that Epson will have available in July the Epson Stylus 2200 wide-format (13 X 44) 'desktop' printer with 7-color 'archival' inks, a hybrid of pigment and dye-based (maybe an improvement over Epson's previous 'archival' inks for the earlier Styluses, which garnered a lot of criticism), at a price of $699. (I really wish Epson and other printer manufacturers made it easier to utilize non-proprietory archival inks! Fat chance I guess, but I think a lot of people who use these types of printers would be willing to pay more for the printer if they were made to accomodate alternative ink systems.)

Felix,

Hi. The version you saw at VersionTracker is a Demo....hence the D instead of R. I actually purchased SilverFast Ai 5.5, so there is a password-protected area for retail updaters...which is where I got 5.5.2r11.

As to the integrated plug-in, the version I am running is a stand-alone application AND has a Photoshop 7 compatible plug-in. They both work. So far, I have not had any issue and have even used the IT8 calibration successfully. The only issue I have right now is the USB/SCSI-only support...no FireWire yet. The scanner works just fine, albeit a bit slowly due to the USB connection.

I am excited about ANY new updates to OS X...I just love it! After I got the scanner up and running in OS X, I reformatted the drive I had with OS 9 and went all the way OS X.

I will gladly shell out the $699 for the new Epson printer. i currently have an HP 1220c/ps, which is a great printer, but I am doing more and more photography so the 7 ink archival system, ability to print on CD's and availability of different types of ink and individual cartridges are very interesting to me. I almost bought an Epson 1280, but decided to wait for any new printers and voila!

If you try the install I outlined, let me know if it is working for you under OS X.

Take care,

Cory

Cory, I'll copy what you did to get Silverfast and Twain?will let you know.
I too had decided I wanted a wide(r) format, archival 7-ink printer, researched diligently, almost bought one but was dissatisfied with what was available and decided to wait and see. At that point, having given up for the time being, up comes the news about the new Epson model, at a decent price. (Just as when you lose something, look everywhere, two or three time, give up and there it is.) I hope it fulfills expectations.
