Noise problems with B&W negative film scans

Postby mikecavanagh » Wed Jun 30, 2010 9:17 pm

Hi

I recently purchased an EpsonV700 scanner but have been very surprised by the amount of noise, particularly noticeable in sky areas. I know scanning produces some noise but there really is a lot and the B&W film I'm scanning is properly exposed Ilford delta 100. I've applied GANE at both moderate and high levels but it does not appear to make a difference. Very disappointed with the scans from such an expensive scanner which I bought specifically for high quality results. Can you advise anything I can try in Silverfsat SE to minimise this problem please as I'm having to take my scans through a neat image plug in to get rid of noise which does not always work well.

Thanks

Mike

Dear Mike,

SilverFast offers the Multisampling and MultiExposure features to reduce scanner noise.
Have you tried these?
They use multiple scans because the noise is allways occuring at different positions in each scan.
This is far superior to any software filter as long as it is noise caused by the hardware.

kind regards,

Thanks

I was under the impression from looking at others posts that this feature (multi sampling and multi exposure) was for colour transparencies rather than B&W film. I'll give it a try...

Hi

From what I can make out of the video demonstration that you directed me to, which is in German, I have to select 48 bit colour and then select an icon which looks like a graphic representation of the sun. This is presumably the multi-exposure button. The problem I have is that my version of the software does not appear to have these features or I can't find them. When I try to click on 48 bit colour it automatically selects 48->24 Bit Colour instead and there is no icon that looks like the sun. Am I missing something obvious please?

Just to be clear, I'm scanning 35mm black and white negative film on an Epson V700 photo scanner using silverfast (Epson-SE).8ba (vers. 6.6.1r2b) that was bundled with the scanner.

Thanks

Mike

Dear Mike,

The MultiExposure option should be available in normal Transparency mode.
If it is available however can be dependant on your licence.

You can open a service request in our support assistant and send us your serial.
Teh I can check this.

kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
