New 4990 with Silverfast AI and Monaco EasyColor

Postby Penelope » Thu Sep 01, 2005 8:15 pm

Sorry, but I have several questions!

1) Can I use the profiles I created using MonacoColor and its positive transparency and reflective media IT-8 targets with Silverfast? Will they generate the same "quality" color profiles as those created using Silverfast's own (optional) color profiling system?
2) If so, then why, on the 4990, do my Silverfast scans of Kodachrome slides have a green cast (as compared to Nikon LS-9000 ED Film Scanner scans of the same slides--viewed, side by side, on the same monitor)? (BTW the slides are gorgeous ones made by my grandfather, a professional photographer, in the 1930's. The color is perfect--as if shot yesterday.)
3) Do I need to make a color profile for positive transparencies--i.e. my slides? (I think not, but do not understand why no one seems to do this!)
4) NikonScan, the program that comes with the Nikon 9000, has a separate setting for Kodachrome. Is there such a setting in Silverfast AI for Kodachrome slides? If not, what settings do you recommend for scanning Kodachrome slides in Silverfast on the 4990?
5) What is the proper setting for Kodak VPH 6028 (Vericolor 400 Professional) medium format film in Silverfast on the 4990? I used Silverfast a while ago on a friend's computer (with an Epson 4870) and think I recall actually putting a number into Silverfast to select a film preset for this film. But now (in a later version of Silverfast?) on my own computer, with my 4990, I do not appear to have that option. How do I tell Silverfast I am using this film (to adjust for its unique mask)?
6) What settings do you suggest be used to scan old sepia prints with Silverfast on the 4990 if I intend to edit them later in Photoshop CS2?
7) I know it is not a good idea to "import" using Twain drivers, because you loose many of the advantages of color profiling. But in CS2, when I "import" and choose Silverfast, sometimes I think I see a message during the scan containing the word "Twain." I'm unclear about what is going on. Am I using a Photoshop "plug-in" when I import? Am I using my color profiles? All I care about, actually, is preserving the benefits of my profiles and being able to eventually edit my scans in Photoshop. So what is the best approach?
8) And last (a really stupid question!) how do I "undo" the Auto Adjustment Tool when I am previewing a scan (and don't like the results of the auto adjustment?)

Thanks so much for your help. I am new to scanning and feel a little overwhelmed...

Dear Penelope

(1) Yes, you can create profiles true to the IT8 standard with Monaco software. These ICC/ICM profiles can be loaded in the SilverFast Ai/HDR/DCPro > "Options" dialogue > "CMS" tab.

(2) Kodakchrome is a very special film material. The surface of the emulsion tends to refract scanner light in a very special way, causing "funny" effects. You will find you need to tinker a bit with the settings to achieve a brilliant scanning results.
Please note that SilverFast lets you save your settings in a drop-down menu for easiest access in later use.
You will have trouble using ICE with Kodachrome film material. The infrared technology has its problems coping with it. Further information can be found here at Kodak Eastman's (acquired ASF) webpages:
http://www.asf.com/support/Scanners/Fil ... s.shtml#Q8
Nikon support pages also have some information about the issue:

(3) Generally spoken, I advise to calibrate the scanner of course. However, if your question is concerned with wether a calibration will change the results with your Kodachrome scans - no, it won't, unfortunately.

(4) There aren't specific settings for scanning Kodachrome film in SilverFast.

(5) You will find a complete list of the SilverFast Negafix profiles at:
https://www.silverfast.com/show/negafixprofiles/en.html

New Negafix profiles are also always incorporated in the latest update release of SilverFast, which can be freely downloaded from our website as well.
If you are missing the profile for your film material, or want to adjust the values set by SilverFast, you want to use the enhance the Negafix dialogue by clicking on the expert icon (not present in SilverFast SE).
After developing your own profile you can save it and import it lateron to another computer, if you like.
You will find a guide to the Negafix tool in PDF format here:
https://www.silverfast.com/show/negafix/en.html
A valuable read is the SilverFast Negafix tutorial in Ian Lyon's Computer Darkroom:
http://www.computer-darkroom.com/sf5-ne ... egafix.htm

(6) Use the "old sepia prints" filter ;o)
No, really, this is a bit to far-fetched and with too much personal variation that I could honestly try to answer this here.

(7) SilverFast comes in two "flavours", as a Photoshop plug-in and as a TWAIN plug-in. You're sure you're using the PS type one?

Best regards
