ICE prescan done at each pass in mutiple scan?

Postby jschweigl » Sun Sep 05, 2004 12:49 am

When I scan with 4 times oversampling ICE is performed at each pass. Is this the correct behaviour? Makes a 2400 dpi scan of a 6x6 neg last for about an hour. I'm using Silverfast AI 6.2.1r9b with an Epson 4870.

BTW, is there any reason not to have 2 times oversampling as well?

Dear JSchweigl

actually and in short: yes.

The longer story:
Multi-sampling needs to compare data of image files, which are very similar. That means that scratches and dust would have needed to be removed first.
That's where ICE comes in. You'll see that ICE needs to be performed before multi-sampling to get acceptable results.

Though it would be theoretically possible to use ICE on the first scan only and then correct the other multi-sampled images with preference of the ICE-scanned data, this method is likely to produce artifacts around the borders of image defects eliminated by the ICE function.

ICE with high res scans is slow with the 4870. A nice article about this can be found at photo.net:

Two times multi-sampling does IMHO make limited sense, however, I will note this down as a feature request so it might well be available in future releases of SilverFast.
If so, it shall be noted in the product history (under news) on our website as usual: https://www.silverfast.com/show/history/en.html
