Exposure doesn't match preview

I'm not quite sure what to call my issue so I'll just have to describe it. I'm using an Epson V700 scanner with the medium format 4-frame/strip holder. I do a prescan to see all the frames, and then draw the frame around the negative I want to see. Most times, the prescan looks very cyan until I draw this frame around one negative. Then all the negatives in the prescan are in a relatively acceptable frame.

When I draw the frame around the negative, it changes the prescanned exposure as soon as the frame is on it. For example, in the general prescan, frame 1 looks dark until I select it and then it lightens up and the rest darken. I'm sure its applying some kind of setting to it, but this is even when I haven't made any adjustments - I'm still just looking. What is frustrating is that when frame 1 is selected, and I'm looking at the other images I have loaded up, some look GREAT as they are, and as soon as I draw a frame around them, or move the frame I have already drawn, something changes (the exposure, color, contrast, etc).

I have so many issues with this software, but this is one of the biggest. I've been dealing with it for so long but am finally going to research fixing the issues....starting with this

So how do I get the scan to look exactly like it does in the preview? I must be missing something...

Dear surfbird,

I am not sure I get it right but I believe you are having trouble understanding how the preview window works.

The preview window works according to the active frame. If you change the active frame the whole preview will change to the one you select, it is just for display purposes, each frame has its own characteristics due to the fact that all pictures are different.
Remember that SilverFast is eliminating the orange mask of you negatives, if you include any portions of the black surrounding area it will look cyan because those are not part of the image itself.

Thank you for answering the above question. It answered a question for me regarding the colour cast when setting the frame on the border of the print.
