Epson V750 and color profiles

Postby john d » Mon Jul 07, 2008 3:11 pm

I just bought a new Epson V750 scanner. It came bundled with SilverFast Ai and x-rite Monaco EZcolor software. My question is, can I use my Monaco IT8 custom color profiles with the SilverFast program when scanning film and prints? I am hoping that all the software that is provide with this scanner is compatible. I am new to scanning and making color profiles is a confusing process. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

Dear john d,

you can use your ICC profiles created with Monaco EZ Color, by selecting them in the CMS Dialog of SilverFast as Scanner profile.
but you can not use the IT8 charts with the Built in Auto IT8 Claibration of SilverFast AI IT8.
Most customers find our Auto IT8 Calibration process much more convenient.

Thomas,
Thanks for your reply. To use SilverFast automatic color profile system, would I need the SilverFast It8 targets, if so, where are they availiable? I want to scan 35 mm Kodachrome, and Ektachrome slide film in 35mm and 4x5 film sizes. I will also be scanning black and white negative film in 6x7 and 4x5 format and would use the gray scale calibration if possible. Thanks for your help. John

Hi John,

Just to chime in ... I recently had the same questions , as I purchase an Epson 750 Pro Scanner with bundled software, which also included SilverFast Ai .
The bundle did not include a bar-coded SilverFast IT8 Target though.

The bundled software also included a MONT IT8 Target from X-Rite - which also did not have any of the required IT8 Target application files included !!.
Alas, I discovered that I then had to download the missing file from X-Rite and calibrate manually using the EZ Color IT8 Target.
At least my scanner profile is now calibrated :-) (which allows me to use SilverFast accurately)

I am very impressed by SilverFast Ai - The level of high-end adjustments, that one can make at the scanning stage is incredible and the technical support via email is very helpful too !

Best Wishes,
Richard

Hi Richard.
Can you please explain how you calibrated your scanner manually with the x-rite IT8 please? I am having trouble getting the xrite it8 ref files that i down loaded to work. They stay dull in the box when it comes to selecting the reference to match to the IT8 scan.. Any thoughts on where to place these or how to make them active? I have placed them in Library-app support-xrite-it8 targets . they have a .mrf and the transparencies have a .txt at the end.
Like a fool i spent the morning trying to calibrate the x-rite files with Silverfast which now i know does not work.
Maybe, if Epson had added a simple page about this then there might not be so much confusion in this area as it is already confusing enough. Why do we get the silverfast package and the x-rite IT8 reference charts and yet they are not compatable!?
i have tried to download a pdf from the x-rite site here http://www.xrite.com/support_doc.aspx?L ... ortID=3000 but it doe not seem to open for me.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Sorry its taken me so long to reply, I have been busy off-line !

I downloaded the correct up to date ref files for my it* target from this link http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=592&Action=Support
and placed them into the library files. Its important to get the correct file for your target !!

Hope this helps possibly to solve the issue

Kind Regards, Richard

HI, my name is Miguel. And I am also new in this world of Digital photography.
I finally found the references files of my IT8 from Monaco. I also bought the EPson V750pro. With both softwares, silverfast and ezcolor. I am really happy with silverfast but I am not sure how to "lock" all the auto options when I am about to create profiles for my printer and scanner.
Please could you help me with how to "lock" all the auto adjustments, please.
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,

Miguel O.V.

Dear MiguelOV,

If you want to IT8 calibrate your scanner directly with SilverFast (Bear in mind the reference file issue named in the entries above) with your Monaco targets, you will have to deactivate the Automatic IT8 calibration in SilverFast since it only works with our barcoded targets.

For this you will have to open the options dialog in SilverFast and select the tab "Auto", the one item before the last one is "Auto IT8 calibration" which is active by default, you wand to uncheck the box to perform a manual IT8 calibration, you might also be interested in activating the last box so you can assign your own name to your calibration profiles.

Thanks for your interest and merry Christmas

I have some of the same issues as described in this thread. However, I did create a profile in Monaco and then will select that profile in SIlverfast.

I want to check to see if I have everything correct, so any feedback is welcomed.

In the options tab in Silverfast I go into CMS and chose:
Color Management
input-> Internal: Colorsync
Internal-> Monitor: Colorsync
Internal-> Output: RGB

Profiles for Colorsync
Scanner (Transparent): epson TRAN MAY09.icc (that's the profile I made using Monaco EZ Color)
Internal: AdobeRGB1998.icc (my working space in Photoshop)
Gray: None
Output/Printer: None
Rendering Intent: perceptual

Embed ICC profile is checked.

Color calibration (http://www.filmscanner.info/en/EpsonPer ... 50Pro.html)

Unfortunately SilverFast wasn't used as a possibility to calibrate the scanner (the provided version does not support this function), but a tool named MonacoEZcolor and a suitable calibration target, instead. This software was however not provided with our test device, so that unfortunately we cannot report on the functionality and results.

Too bad, because naturally we're very interested in how well an IT-8 calibration with an unknown tool would work in conjunction with the SilverFast software. I can only assume that the original SilverFast IT-8 calibration is better and has a more precise target, but also is the more expensive solution. It's a pity that for the Epson V750 Pro the IT-8 calibration of SilverFast is not even available for a surcharge.

Dear ima,

I am affraid you statement does not reflect the reality. Especially when you say:

ima wrote:It's a pity that for the Epson V750 Pro the IT-8 calibration of SilverFast is not even available for a surcharge.

This is absolutely not true. Regularly the Epson V750 Pro comes with SilverFast Ai Stuio ME IT8. This means it comes with the highest version of SilverFast which also includes IT8 calibration, the problem is that the reference files that work with the targets bundled to the scanner (Monaco) are not standard compliant, hence those targets can only be used with the software from Monaco and not with SilverFast.

Note that you can always buy an upgrade to a higher version of SilverFast with IT8 calibration, this is true for every scanner we support.

Cheers

If the Epson V750 Pro already comes with the highest version of SilverFast which also includes IT8 calibration then what version are you referring to as an upgrade ??
