Epson ES1200C (GT9000) + WinXP Pro + S.F. SE (demo) = crash!

Postby Steve Laux » Sun Jan 26, 2003 9:57 pm

I am new to Silverfast, and hopeful, but...I can't get Silverfast SE (latest demo version) to work with my system: IBM Pentium 4; WinXP Pro; Adaptec AHA-2930CU PCI SCSI card; Epson ES-1200C (GT-9000) flatbed scanner; Photoshop 5, TWAIN interface. Symptoms: prescan actually begins, but hangs after about 20% completion (I can see the image load from top, but then...Silverfast and Photoshop quit and scanner freezes). I have tried another SCSI card (AHA-2940; same result even though not XP "compatible"); various SCSI cable lengths (2' same as 4'); and Photoshop 7 (tryout version, same result). I have loaded Adaptec ASPI 4.71.2 (I bet this doesn't matter?). XP system log reports twice: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\aic78xx1". Sounds like hardware, but everything worked under Win Me with original Epson TWAIN! Also, SCSI-based Nikon LS-1000 works fine still with its original TWAIN. Has anyone got an ES-1200C to operate under WinXP? Adaptec says IRQ sharing "may matter"; SCSI card shares IRQ 5 with NVIDIA display card and Intel SMBus Controller...(if important, how to change?). Any help is appreciated, or is my ES-1200C out of service?!

Have you tried to move your SCSI-card to another slot?

moved SCSI card to new slot?

Postby Steve Laux » Mon Jan 27, 2003 2:19 pm

I may have tried this (too many trials ago to remember), so should try it again, I guess. A 4Gig IBM SCSI disk and Nikon LS-1000 scanner both operate perfectly attached to my AHA-2930CU SCSI card as is, so moving the card would really matter??

Just for the record, I downloaded and installed Silverfast AI's demo onto an XP Pro machine today, and it had the same problem with an Epson Expression 800 scanner on a SCSI hookup. Partial scan, then crash. We're running Photoshop 5.5 and I tried both the Photoshop plugin and Twain versions of Silverfast. Same result. I'm guessing this is an XP compatibility issue. I may try SE, too, but I bet from your experience it will be the same.

epson 2450 with silverfast AI 6 demo hangs during prescan

Postby lordofmordor » Fri Feb 07, 2003 6:38 pm

I have the same exact problem. The silverfast SE 5.0 that came with the 2450 scanner works fine without any problems. The Silverfast AI 6 demo hangs at the end of prescan.

two follow-up thoughts

Postby Steve Laux » Sun Feb 09, 2003 5:20 pm

I have two follow-up thoughts on my original post:
(1) I just tried the newest SilverFast SE demo (Epson ES-1200C/GT-9000; Windows; TWAIN interface -- download file name "SFTWE-6.0.1r36B(Epson-iSE).exe") as it changed at the end of January, 2003 from 36A to 36B. My original preview scan failure is unchanged with the new release.
(2) As another poster in these fora reported, I went to www.hamrick.com and downloaded the "v**s**n 7.6.11 for Windows" program. It works with my ES-1200C, and so seems to absolve my computer of any hardware or configuration problems regarding scanning. But I really prefer the TWAIN interface, and would much prefer SilverFast if I could only get it working. Is it possible to get a backlevel (version 5.x) copy of the SE demo, to understand if it functions properly? I would happily be a "guinea pig" for such an experiment.

I was finally able to get the AI 6 demo to work. The trick seems to be to turn off the scanner when it hangs during the prescan. The silverfast comes alive again. Then I can turn the scanner back on. Still shaky after few scans.

I have the same problem with the 6 demo on a PC running XP, Epson 2450 (USB), Photoshp 6.0. Wonder if this problem occurs with the CD installed version or if it's confined to the demo download. Would like to use Silverfast Ai. The SE that came bundled with the 2450 works fine. The idea of turning the scanner on and off every time you want to scan doesn't cut it.

for what its worth...

I downloaded the demo of S.F. full version 6.0.1r32 (Windows/Epson/TWAIN), and it behaves the same for me as the SE demo: crash after the prescan starts (also regular scan crashes the same way). No amount of turning scanner on/off allows me to obtain proper scanning operation. The Window's system log reports: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\aic78xx1", as I think I mentioned before. More interestingly, the application error log reports: "Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 5.0.128.0, faulting module epson.de, version 6.0.1.32, fault address 0x0001026d". I hope this can aid someone in diagnosing my problem.

It seems that my problem is solved. I called tech support, and they provided me with access to a demo download of the very latest version of Ai 6. When I installed it, it worked just fine in demo mode with the Epson 2450 (USB), and it also worked with my old Epson Expression 800 on a SCSI connection. Now I just have to wait for the CD to arrive :( Hope it works as well as the download.

problem solved

Postby Steve Laux » Fri Feb 28, 2003 1:51 am

The problem which caused me to post to this forum regarding my inability to scan is now fixed after having installed the latest Silverfast SE demo for Epson ES1200C/GT9000, version 6.0.1r39. As a result, I have paid my money and am now a licensed user. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.
