EPSON 750 and B&W

Postby AaronBasus » Tue Jun 20, 2006 8:47 pm

I have just purchased an EPSON V 750-M Pro in order to scan 300-350 b&w negatives. The purpose is for a monograph ?offset printing- to be published in due time.

The negatives are of 35mm and 6X7 size, and are all Ilford FP4 and HP4 (? HP4 not HP5), shot between 1969 and 1978.

Could some sister soul help with the proper options/settings of Ai that comes with the scanner? I would be really obliged.

Best Regards

Aaron Basus

(P.S.) Could it be that the as above options/settings are different between dry and wet mounting scanning?

hi...
1. set your resolution and size. for photo print u have 300dpi. step the size u want.
2. use 48bit color. even if it is b/w negatives and desaturate it.
3. i highky recomend to study properly the nega-fix. u can use the predifined negative profiles by silverfast, but i think it is better to set them to "other" and then use eithar the "standart" or the "linear". u can adjust your negafix from here with the curve. looks into the movies how it done. u will have greater control which is important for older negatives as u describe.
4. edit your photos with silverfast editing tools.
5. set the sharpness (also better use the USM) or if u want u can use GANE.
6. use the dust and stratch removal - old negatives may have alot of it.
7. save in tiff

prior to everything set your color management settings in cms
and it is good idea to make some studies of silverfast - u can get great results this way.

and good luck :-)

I have not been able to get a usable B&W scan from Silverfast, however, Epson scan produces perfect full range B&W scans.

Why Silverfast even has B&W in their software is a mystery. Why not just remove the embarrassing failure, and admit they do not have a clue about B&W?
