Epson 4870 ICE, high DPI, large format scans not working

Postby bossanova808 » Tue Jun 29, 2004 6:12 am

Hello

I uninstalled all previous versions of Silverfast, rebooted, and installed the latest version 6.2.1r5.

I am using Silverfast as a standalone application on a 2.8 ghz PC with 2 gig of RAM.

I am unable to get the new version to work as advertised :( - I can not scan a large format transparency (4 by 5 inches) at 2400, 3200 or 4800 DPI with ICE.

At 1200 DPI it works ok.

Silverfast appears to enter the scanning stage twice (I presume RGB, followed by Infrared) but immediately after the second stage the propellor stops spinning and the application hangs.

Any ideas?

Cheers, I will do so.

Without ICE, I was just able to scan at 4800 DPI, all of a 5 by 4 inch tranny. That, at least, is a first with the Epson 4870. The results are a little softer and noisier but about 90% on par with an Imacon Flextight....pretty impressive.

If ICE would work, I'd be in heaven!

It's now 6 months later. Has there been any change in the status of this problem?

I just started to use SF-SE v6.4.0 r9c on Windows XP. The error message that I'm receiving is "An error occurred at the start of the scanning process. Digital ICE needs a minimum image of 128 x128 pixel!" on all transparancy scans. Any frame size and output resolution seems to cause this to happen. I've played with ouput file sizes from 3 MB up to 74 MB...

I can apply ICE for any reflective scan.

problem with Epson 4870 and Digital ICE

Postby prendoe » Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:55 am

I have exactly the same problem as KeystoneKorner reported below, except I'm a relatively new owner of an Epson 4870 and SilverFast SE. Any help?

Can you please both check, if you have a DLL named "DICELibSF1.dll" inside your Windows\system32 folder? This DLL is needed for ICE processing and if it's missing, you will get the stupid error message you saw.
I checked our installer, and it does install this DLL, but please check for yourself. If you have this DLL, please don't hesitate to contact LaserSoft Imaging support staff: http://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/en.html

Best regards
Ralf

DICELibSF1.dll appears in my folder. The version is 3.0.5.0, with the description "Digital ICE library for Epson 4870+," from Eastman Kodak Company. There is a DICELibSF2.dll file as well.

Out of curiosity, are there any known compatibility with Windows XP-SP2? That's what I'm running.

The version of "DICELibSF1.dll" should be 3.0.12.0, I don't know how you get your one. Maybe this is the problem. Send me your eMail address via PM and I will send you the DLL. Problems with XP-SP2 are not known.
Nevertheless please contact our support team at http://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/en.html

Best regards

I loaded the Epson software before loading SilverFast. Your previous message implied that the SF installation installs DICELibSF1.dll. I'll guess that the installation failed to overwrite the existing DLL.

Just for laughs, I'll delete all my scanning software, delete any leftover DECELibSF?.dll files, reinstall SilverFast, and see what happens.

I've just confirmed that the intstaller for SF-SE v6.4.0 r9c installs v3.0.5.0 of DICELibSF1.dll... I'll be emailing you, Ralf!

DICE is nice! And this is how you can make it work for you:

1) Look for the DICE library that gets loaded as part of the Epson installation. It's named "DICELib.dll" and is found in c:\WINDOWS\twain_32\ESCNDV\ES0034 (or whatever drive your system files reside on). If you allow your mouse cursor to hover over the file name, a ballon will pop up to show you some file details, like file version. It just might say version 3.0.12.0. If so, you're half way home.

2) Copy DICELib.dll over to the c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.

3) Find the file "DICELibSF1.dll" and hover the mouse cursor over it. It might indicate version 3.0.5.0. DICELibSF1.dll does not get loaded into the SYSTEM32 folder until you install SF. Rename the file "DICELibSF1.dll" to something like "old_DICELibSF1.dll."

4) Rename DICELib.dll to "DICELibSF1.dll."

5) Reboot your computer.

Earlier this evening I scanned some slides at 4800 dpi. I scanner went through all its passes (per slide) and generated 78MB files for each slide. No crashes, no nothing. In each case, you can see how DICE did its work.

So it looks like the SF-SE v6.4.0 r9c installer I download from here had the "wrong" version of "DICELibSF1.dll" packaged. The "DICELibSF2.dll" that is also part of the SF-SE install has a version number of 3.0.12.0.

Happy scanning everyone!

I'm happy too, that DICE is working now for you.
We will check the installer.

Best regards
Ralf
