Hi Dragoon

I have the same problem except that the line is red and it is a bit further to the right than yours. I scanned without any documents (with the cover closed) and the line is still there.

I went to the Epson web site and sent an email to tech suppport. I'll let you know wht they say.

I hope it's not the scanning light itself. How does one go about replacing this light?

Any other 1640SU users out there experience the same thing?

Regards

That won't be the lamp. Looks like a CCD sensor failure or somthing in the optical path. Still could be the calibration area - on the strip itself if you cannot see anything on the glass. Is it still under warranty ? If so call support for a warranty repair. If not, some people have removed the "glass" and gently blown with a lens cleaning bulb/brush over the mirrors and sensor to move any dust out. A good brush will also have a polonium (anti static) thread to kill the static charge holding the dust on the mirror. Be extremely carefull as the mirrors are very delicate and easy to damage. And DO NOT used canned air - you can contaminate the mirror or damage it. i have also heard of people tilting the scanner on edge and running a scan pass to dislodge some of the dust. Never tried it so i don't know if the scanner could be damaged. Try at your own risk.

How would I clean the CCD/CIS, or mirror thats causing the line, or what can I do, top is unscrewed for now thats all but im ready to open other parts.

PS I looked at http://willshak.com/scanner/ and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/scanner2.htm but im still confused by it as thats HP layout not epsons, (I can take a picture of mine Epsons inside if it helps) and so.. Any high pro or a knowledge can help? (Ill try to get this brush)

Hi Folks

Epson support says to uninstall the scanner, remove the Epson Twain driver. Then reinstall. If that still does not work, they say the scanner needs to be serviced.

I tried it and sthe problem did not go away.

Looks like I'll have to try what degrub suggested.

Hi again folks

I just noticed that my TWAIN driver version (5.54A) was the same as before. Just to be sure I did not made an error, I redownloaded version 5.71A and followed the installation instructions. After rebooting I noticed the driver version was again at 5.54A.

How do I completely remove V5.54A so that I can install V5.71A?

I like to try this again before I take apart the scanner ...

Thanks

Hi folks

Well, for some reasons, Windows XP keeps reinstalling TWAIN V5.54A.

This is what I did:

In Device Manager, uninstall the scanner.
Unplug the USB connector.
In ADD/REMOVE Software, remove the EPSON TWAIN 5 driver.
Reboot Windows XP
Install Epson TWAIN Driver V5.71A
When done, reconnect the scanner.
Message says "New hardware found". It identifies the sccanner correctly.
Message says "Hardware is installed and ready for use"
Reboot computer.

Doing a scan from witin Photoshop CS2, the EPSON TWAIN 5 pops up still indicating version 5.54A. Somehow Windows XP does not see the new dirver I installed.

Thanks for any help on this.
