definitive slide scanning document?

Postby keebler » Thu Apr 26, 2007 3:00 pm

Hi,

I've done my best to find a website which lists the definitive steps to properly scanning slides.

I think i've done a fantastic job on some, but then I noticed that SF AI ME wasn't properly removing dust during the SRD stage (manually). When I tried the ICE method, it told me it wouldn't work on black and white negatives....which puzzled me b/c my slides are colour. Then i read the manual and it says that certain types of slides won't work with SRD (and I will admit, this kind of ticks me off b/c there was no mention of this before I purchased the product - you would think there might be a disclaimer refuting such facts?). BUT, that is another point.

Another point is I would think that if the SRD wouldn't work with certain types of slides, then why in God's name would SF STOP me from doing all that work in SRD BEFORE not working?

my point is this: is there a guide to scanning slides? I'd like to know what i'm doing wrong (if i'm doing anything wrong).

Any help folks? I would really, really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Keebler

Dear Keebler,
of course there are hundreds of guides ( often with contrary solutions ) found on the we ?b and even in this forum.
One of the latest, although posted in the Nikon Forum, is this thread:
http://www.silverfast.com/forum/archiving-slides--und-amp-negs-t4709.html

Here Gregory C. has a pretty good summary about archiving slides/negs.

About the ICE problems with certain film types:
The Software cannot detect beforehand if ICE will work or not on the film you use !
So all there is to do is to give a warning to make you aware...

The Problem is that certain films ( most, not *all* black and white films and some color films ) use chemicals that make image details "look" like defects for the Infrared scan that deliveres the defect mask for later processing.

So the Software basically sees a *lot* of defects in that kind of film but it looks like a valid color and Infrared scan nevertheless, only the User will find out later that his images are destroyed.

Whether the scanner makers and / or makers of ICE should more openly tell you this fact or not is something i can't comment.

:-(
