I did a search on the forum and found the document "Colour Managed Workflow for Epson Scanners and Printers". It is really thorough and I followed it to create profiles for my 4870 scanner and 1280 printer.
One thing about the process really confuses me so I would appreciate any comments/help. The article says to scan the target in silverfast using 48 bit HDR color BUT when you use this profile in Silverfast to scan at 48->24 bit color. Shouldn't the "scan type" for both creating the profile AND using the profile be the same???
Any comments would be appreciated and Happy Holidays!

Using 48-bit should be OK since the 48 -> 24 is down sampling via software, right? This would mean you should get better results because you have effectively profiled the 48-bit (three sixteen bit channels) source that is being used to create the 24-bit (three 8 bit channels) rendition.

RAG,
That's what I thought but if I use the profile I created with 48bit HDR all my scans at 48 bit and 48-24 are too bright. Eg. If I rescan the target using the new profile and scan at 48bit the resulting scan is way to bright.
I tried to create profiles at 48bit and 48-24bit settings but EasyColor tells me that there is not enough information in the dark areas/shadows of the scan of the target to create a profile.
I guess I'll just scan everything at 48bit HDR
