big difference in raw scan Silverfast VS Epson Scan

Postby eriksatie » Sun Jan 07, 2018 12:05 am

Hi, I'm testing Silverfast SE provided with my new V800 in scanning 35mm negatives.

I've found that scanning at 4800 DPI in Silverfast show unnatural pixel stripes, such as the output has been interpolated by the software, while scanning with Epson Scan the output is as expected.

I'm attaching a test photo, scanned with silverfish at 4800 DPI with just Negafix, not other processing applied. The same photos is also scanned with Epson Scan, with automatic curves applied and nothing else.

I know that V800 has just about 2800 DPI of real resolution, but I cannot understand why the raw output is so different, being Silverfast apparently upscaling a lower resolution output from the scanner

Dear user,

EPSON scan always applies certain post-processing filters to the images. So the effect you see might be obscured by one of those filters.
SilverFast always uses the native scan resolutions offered by the driver. Interpolation only takes place for sizes above the scanner's maximum resolution. When interpolating it is made sure that no values are used that would cause interpolation lines.

Kind regards,
Arne
