Greetings to the forum, and thanks for your time.
I just received a new plustek OpticFilm 7600i Ai bundeled with SilverFast Ai Studio 6.6. Running on a Mac Pro 2x3GHz Dual-Core Intel machine with 16 GB RAM and about 370 GB free hard disk space. Scanner is connected to a USB port on the computer (no hub) with no other USB devices (except the keyboard and mouse). No problems with set up of the scanner or installation of SilverFast, which concluded in a normal installation.
Got 4 ordinary 35 mm slide together into the tray without any problem. Powered up the unit. Booted up the software (SilverFast Universal Launcher). Serial number went in with no issues. Pushed the tray into the first detent and hit prescan. Scanner whirred and saw a light come on inside the unit. All appeared to be working fine.
Prescan result was an almost black image with a few completely black vertical streaks through it. I got identical results with the slide tray in all 4 detents, and with no slides in the tray. I also got the same result using the photoshop plugin.
I'm thinking I have a defective scanner here, and have eMailed this question of plustek's tech support, but it also occurred to me that maybe a neophyte user like myself could be missing something very basic. As I said, the software appears to be working normally, and appears to be communicating with the scanner, but the result is as if I'm trying to scan an opaque slide instead of a regular 35mm landscape.
Thanks for you time,

Re: Way Underexposed Scans...
Dear Mr Hostetler,
have you tested the manufacturers software?
You only have to remember that the manufacturers software often only works in 24bit so stripes are sometimes not as clearly visible there.
But they should be better visible if you load the image into an imaging software like Photoshop or GIMP and change the contrast settings for the image.
kind regards
Arne Ketelhohn
