very dusty blacks.

Postby cosimo » Fri May 13, 2011 10:35 pm

hi,
i've been using the isdr when scanning 16x12" c-type prints which helps a lot, but i am still getting very dusty blacks. the bed is getting a good anti static clean and the prints are clean too. is there anything i can do to help this, either in isdr or by preventing the software from looking too hard for detail in the black areas?
thanks, cosimo

Dear cosimo,

Are you scanning reflectives or transparencies?

iSRd can only be used with transparencies.
In this case make sure these are not B&W images.
Those can not be processed by iSRD due to the silver halide emulsion diffusing the infrared beam.

The iSRD settings are activated by clicking the iSRD icon untill the settings icon appears below it.
iSRD offers two settings in expert mode:

For B&W images and reflective scans you have to use SRD.
This offers a lot more settings because the software can not use the infrared information to detect defects.
It is suggested to use masks to protect sensitive image areas with fine detail.

hello,
i'm scanning prints, so that explains that.
can i ask, would it be the case that the scanner is searching too hard for information and finding only dust in the black areas? can anything be done about that?
thanks, cosimo

Dear cosimo,

yes, that is possible.
That is what the settings in the SRD are for.
When these are set to high SilverFast might detect defects where there are none.
That is something you have to determine by trial and error for each individual scan.
Similar scans of cause require less adjustment.

Kind regards,

Arne Ketelhohn.
