SIlverfast will not allow me to scale my scan!!!!!!
AM a new owner of Silverfast for the Epson 4870....the problem started with SIlverfast sometimes resetting the scale of a scan (usually to 56%)
This was annoying....but I'd reset it back to 100% and go on with my work...now it wont let me set it to any other number...I can type in 100%..and in a few seconds it turns back to 56...it also will not allow me to change the output scan size....Its making me feel like I'm going crazy...and I have a lot of work to do....please help
WIn 2000, Photoshop CS (but the problem occurs in stand alone or PShop)
HELP!!!! Please???
Now that I'm here...I have some IT8 targets and wanted to profile my scanner....but do not see the profile button on my software....do I actually have to purchase a totally different version just to profile?

Dear LMimagery
I guess you have enabled the descreening filter. If so, please read about scanning concepts ( https://www.silverfast.com/show/scanningconcept/en.html ) to get more information about this behaviour and the reason behind it.
For some scanners the IT8 option is already enabled, for others it has to be bought as an upgrade. What you actually need then is an appropriate serial number (and sometimes a special "Feature CD") to enable this option.

Still don't get it
I have read the page you referred me to and see no mention of the scan size changing ( I do see that Silverfast will choose the proper scan resolution once you have changed your output needs)
THis is not the case...as I can NOT change the output size...the program simply won't let me.....and I am using descreening...but why should that limit anything?
I am starting with an image say 3x6 inches...and need an output of approximately ??x3500 or 4000 pixels, why can't I get there? It will defineately need descreening...as the image is reflective and from a magazine/book. So....could you please tell me how I can set the scan size to accept the paramiters I wnat and not what the programn thinks I want?
As for the IT8 calibration....why is it free on some scanners and paid on others? I bought this scanner, and the best of your software thinking I can profile it. I have my serial number...how do I get a "Feature CD"?
THank you for any help
I apologize for being slightly annoyed with not being able to get on with the work I bought this software to do.
I am thankful for any resolution you can offer

Dear LMimagery
please make sure you locked the output value (with the little lock symbol before the value box - cf. no 1). Also, please make sure that lock symbol behind the output file size stays open (cf. no 2):
Please excuse me, I did not say the IT8 comes free for some scanners.
More true, SilverFast Ai can only be purchased for these scanners with the IT8 option enabled.
Please surf the LaserSoft Imaging online store to see for which scanners two different versions of SilverFast (Ai with and without enabled IT8 option) are available.
For SilverFast prices for the Epson 4870, please refer to https://www.silverfast.com/pricing/414/en.html
If you want your serial number to be check for IT8 option being enabled or not, please contact support staff.
The "Feature CD" is part of the Ai upgrade to Ai with IT8.

Nothing Helps
OK...I tried the suggestions....but need to use descreening on my scans and they have to sized to where Silverscan just will not allow me to do it. I can understand you feeling you know where the scaling should be with descreening....but I totally can not understand you not letting me descreen at whatever scale I want (need actually). That restriction alone takes all the posative things that Silverfast has and makes them nearly useless
So tell me....realizing that some resolutions and scaling will work with descreening better, why can't I have the choice to desceen at any size I want....and deal with the image after the scan....(please???)

Scan Scaling---Why no answer??
I posted a question to you guys asking for the ability to scan....with descreening at whatever size I want.....again, I know it man not be optimal conditions, but I want ther choice. Other, much less sophisticated scanning software will allow me to do this and as YOUR customer, I want to know why I can't do it with SILVERFAST.
I anxiously await an answer.

Why no Answer?????
Guys
I am willing to accept thast the customer is NOT always right....if tere is enough logical evidence to prove him wrong
I spent a LOT more money on this software than needed for a feature that is simply not there. Please tell me why you won't allow the user to scan at whatever resolution he/she needs with or without descreenng.
You obviously have ideas where resolution vs descreening break down...so post a warning about using the combinations but don't disallow it....I am getting perfectly useable scans at the resolutions I need WITH descreening with the stock EPSON software....but I certainly wish I could do the same with yours as I paid for all the extra features.
PLEASE EXPLAIN

No Answer?...How about a refund?
Guys...please forward this thread to your president....I sincerely think you have a good product, but to not answer simple questions and a reasonable request to get what I need out of your package is kind of rude.
How about a refund and we call it a day?
Thanks

that damn descreening business
I followed this thread in anticipation as I too have the same problem.
But I am confused, did they just start ignoring you??
I have used a piece of crap canon scanner that you can buy at a corner store for a while before purchasing a kick-ar$e microtek scanner with Silverfast Ai bundled because I had heard and read great things about it.
But on my first attempt to scan a magazine I soon came across the same problems as the previous writer. Why is it that my old and crappy canon could do these scans and produce adequate results and silverfast can not...or will not?
There has to be a way around this. A very large part of my work involves scanning magazine images and I should be about to import them at 100%.
I too will look forward to a solution...

descreen restrictions
I returned to this forum specifically to ask about this problem of descreening reducing the size of the original in proportion to the resolution required. I expected to find that I was doing something wrong. What I find is an answer to a previous questioner that does not work for him, and then when he returns to clarify he is ignored.
This reminds me so much of my experience upgrading from Silverfast 5 to 6. Version 6 did not work with my scsi card even though it was perfectly happy with 5, so I continued to ask for help, was given one answer only, upgrade apsi layers, which did not work, and was then dumped from any further help.
I use it now on USB, but find the attitude to problems clearly unacceptable.
Solutions please, not sulking!

Any progress on this issue??
I was extremely dissapointed when I first started using SFAI and found out about this "feature". Our default software that came with our scanner (LinoColor Elite) did a great job at descreening large scans, with no limitations. But, unfortunately, it was discontinued and only works in OS 9.
We bought SF because it seemed to be the best solution for OSX. But we have to scan a lot of historic photos from books or postcards, and there is simply no possible way to get originals for these. And they will be output as large-format posters.
We've tried scanning at an angle, doing various Photoshop tricks, etc. But nothing comes even close to how well it looks to use an average descreening filter when scanning.
PLEASE GIVE THE USER THIS OPTION! Thanks.
And does anybody know of any decent options that would work under OSX to allow us this capability??

there is a method you can try. it worked for me when scanning 133 lpi magazine articles.
in the Descreening dialog, double the lpi specification. eg, if the magazine is 133 lpi, use 266 (or 250,275) in the Descreening dialog.
with a scanning resolution of 300 dpi, I was able to scan and descreen at 100% using the higher descreening value.
note that the scan will be slower because you will be scanning at a higher resolution to get the higher descreening value, and the final scan will be just a *little* less sharp than a scan with the normal descreening value.
regards
Gregory
