Silverfast descreening under Windows XP

Postby Albert Klee » Wed Jun 07, 2006 4:09 pm

I have just replaced my old Epson Perfection 3200 scanner with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro (my Nikon 2000 film scanner bit the dust so I decided to go this route as dedicated film scanners seem to be going the way of the dodo).

In the past I used a version of Silverfast that I purchased for the Epson 3200 and was well satisfied. The Epson Perfection V750 Pro came with a full version of Silverfast 6 and I had no trouble with either the scanner or the software installation. My computer is based on an Intel board - Pentium 4 with a 3.6 MHz processor - and there is 1 MB of RAM installed and I run Windows XP Pro.

Everything went well until I scanned a color image using the descreening option (the size of the test file was about 10 MB). The scan itself was rapid but I sat around for fully five minutes before the descreening was complete (if I had a mirror I could see my beard grow). I fiddled a bit with the descreening options and then went to the Silverfast site and downloaded the latest version (6.4.4r2). I installed the upgrade but it did not solve the problem.

I went to the Epson software that came with the V750 and did a scan using its descreening option. It produced a very nice scan in a short period of time.

So, why is the scan unbearably slow with the Silverfast but not so with the Epson software? Is there some setting in the Silverfast 6 software that I am overlooking? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Descreening

Postby LSI_Marquardt » Fri Jun 09, 2006 9:57 am

Dear Albert Klee,

it's absolutely not common that a descreen scan needs so much time
at a file size of about 10MB. This usually needs 30sec. max.
Please do a support request by email and report all your settings
like input and output resolution, scaling etc., we will help you.
But please hold in mind that the descreening is generally slower
as in i.e. Epson scan, but regarding quality it is much better.
But as slow as you mentioned the descreening is definitely not.

Please do a support request, we will help you in this issue or
contact me directly: philipp.marquardt@silverfast.com

kind regards,
