I just upgraded and discovered a new problem and an unsolved old problem.

1. There is a section of the preview window that is unresponsive. Clicking on the scan frame in the area does not select that fram.e It's often a trial and error process to find where I can click to select that frame. If I'm scanning 8 4x6 pictures in landscape mode, the problem frame is the third one down on the left side.

2. Since upgrading I cannot select the any image type in the menu below "Skin Tones". Selecting any of these, the menu changes to "Standard". Many presets are saved with these selections, so naturally, selecting them gets the "Strandard" type instead.

3. Is there anty way to have Silverfast scan a single image, save it, and NOT launch Photoshop? I have never asked to have Photoshop launch when I scan and HATE this feature. Please tell me how to kill it.

You should be able to launch and run SilverFast without Photoshop by using the SilverFast Short cut in the program group.

Well, I'm running the SF program on its own, not as a plug-in from Photoshop. If my scan mode is 'Normal', not 'Batch', then when a scan is done it is opened in Photoshop, which means launching Photoshop if it isn't running.

The Preference Delete suggestion only mentions running Silverfast through Photoshop, which I am not usually doing. I deleted the Twain preferences, but the program still has the same problems.

Are you running the TWAIN (Technology With Out An Interesting Name) version, or the Photoshop plug-in, which also runs stand-alone?

The only reason to run the TWAIN version is to make SilverFast available to applications other than Photoshop.

Photoshop CS was just reinstalled on my computer. There is now no folder for Silverfast in Photoshop / Plug-ins / Import-Export. So that cannot be where the preference file is.

I used the Windows control panel to remove all SilverFast components, then reistalled from a brand new download. As soon as I launched Silverfast, the preview window showed my last scan, meaning the preference file I though I deleted was not deleted.

Problems continue.

Getting extremely frustrated as I cannot perform the scans as I want to, and Photoshop keeps launching unless I use a Batch scan.

Try the following:

1. Un-install SilverFast
2. Delete the LaserSoft directory in "c:\program files" (I am assuming you do not have any other LaserSoft products installed, but if you do then only delete the SilverFast folder inside of the LaserSoft folder)
3. Follow the directions for removing the Prefs (Both TWAIN and Photoshop Plug-in) (Also to a search to make sure there are no other "Prefs" folders hidden on the computer, like in another Windows user?s profile)
4. Restart the computer
5. Install SilverFast (Only the Photoshop Plug-in or the TWAIN version, not both)

Done all steps, 1 through 5.

No help. The Image Type options are available in the menu, as they were before, but I cannot select most of the options. A scan with the stand-alone program and Photoshop not running causes the scan to be opened in Photoshop. And I still have trouble accessing the left side of the scan window about two thirds of hte way down.

I remember an earlier version from about a year ago that worked much better. Can I "UP"grade to a less buggy version?

That is really bizarre! There is no option that I am aware of for opening Photoshop after a scan. I think you may have some Spyware, Malware, or a virus on your computer or something.

I really doubt that. I am diligent about security and viruses, and have never had a virus on my computer. I reject most cookies and all installations that I am promted for unexpectedly. The company, too is strict about unauthorized installations. I don't even have Real Audio/Video (YAY!) or Quicktime (Boo!).

Also, the automatic launching of Photoshop when a scan is done is a very specific thing, running only when I scan using Silverfast. Rather an odd sort of circustance to program a worm for, don't you think?

one other suggestion: find the \twunk* and \twain* directories (*16 or 32 or nothing) and delete all references to SF and your scanner. uninstall SF and all references. Re install . You might have to delete the EPSON references as well and uninstall and install Epson as well.

Hi there,

Regarding your auto-magic opening of a scanned file, I think you might be running into a standard Windows 'feature'.

Try this:

1) Open Windows Explorer
2) Click on 'Tools' then 'Folder Options', menu bar item
3) Select the 'File Types' tab, and wait for the list to be populated
4) Find the file type you are having trouble with. eg: TIF and/or TIFF etc
5) Highlight that file type and click on the 'Advanced' button
6) On the 'Edit File Type' dialog, is the "Confirm Open After Download" checkbox ticked on? If the answer is 'Yes', then de-select the checkbox ie: turn if off.
7) Click on 'OK', then 'Close'

Try a SilverFast scan to file now.

That's a nuisance! This must be an XP only dialog. Have a look to see if you have a similar option on your Windows 2000 based system file type dialogs.

I still suspect that you are suffering from Windows trying to be helpful via some kind of file association option(s).
