red colour cast in shadows with IT8

Postby Alex Ramsay » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:33 am

I'm currently using SF 6.4.4r2, recently recalibrated with my original C-ROES 35mm target (IT8 7/1 - 1993 1999-10). I'm now scanning mostly 6x7 Fuji Provia on a Polaroid SS120, using CS2 and OS 10.3.9. My monitor is calibrated regularly.
My problem is: although the prescan is reasonably accurate, when I click auto-adjust, I usually get a completely flat image and very often with a strong red cast in the shadows. I can remove some of the colour cast using the colour cast slider under the histogram, but this in turn affects the contrast and I end up having to do a lot to the image in Photoshop. Surely I should be able to get a pretty accurate scan straight off? Can anyone help?

apply an "S" curve the to image, adjust the R channel to reduce the red in the darker portions of the image. You will need to experiment on the order and amount of curve adjustment to get it right.

But I have to do this in Photoshop, right? Can't I make a general adjustment in Silverfast so that my scans are pretty close right from the start?

Dear Alex

depending you need select the appropriate "image type" preset on the SilverFast main dialogue's "frame" tab.
Also, please note that the SilverFast "options" dialogue features an "auto" tab, which lets you adjust the way the image auto-adjustment tool works.

Detailed information on these options is given in the SilverFast manual.
