Prescan alignment errors

Postby keithb » Thu Mar 27, 2008 2:07 pm

I have recently bought an Epson V700 Photo scanner and with it came Silverfast SE. I have recently updated this to v6.5.5r4, though the problem below occurs with both versions. When setting the position of the red scan rectangle on the prescan window, I have noticed a significant difference in position to the equivalent rectangle in the zoomed selection. For example, on recently scanning a 2.6 cm square positive transparency, (there are 12 slides in the V700 frame holder), I set the red rectangle to accurately sit just inside the first of the 12 small images. When this is zooomed in, so that the image is approx 20.5 cm on my monitor, the equivelent red rectangle is now about 2 cm lower and covers part of the black section below the slide image. Of course, this loses about 2 cm from the top of the image. The final scan position matches zoomed prescan, but not the original smaller image. Why should there be such a discrepancy? This occurs for 35 mm negatives as well.

Dear keithb,

can you try draw SilverFast prescan window larger? Or is it already large?

Best regards

Prescan alignment errors

Dear Martin
The window is quite large as it contains 12 images. Each standard 35mm slide image in unzoomed form is about 2.6 cm by 4 cm in this window. I have included two screenshots of my full screen: one shows a typical 35mm slide, and the other its zoomed form. The whole screen measures 37.5 by 30 cm and the immage window, showing the 12 images, is 27.5 by 16 cm. The zoomed single image is approx 20.5 by 13.5. As you can see, the zoomed version shows the red frame about 1cm lower than it ought to be to match the red frame in the smaller corresponding image. I have experimented with the 35 mm slide in different positions within the holding frame. The discrepancy increases from the top, where it is hardly there to the worst at one of the bottom positions, where it is greater than 1 cm.

I have tried the scame procedure with the Epson Scan software which came with the scanner. It also shows the 12 images, and you can zoom in if need be, but I do not see any significant discrepancy in any parts of the frame when comparing smaller and zoomed images.

It is quite useful to be able to set up 12 images on the same screen at once, without having to zoom each one to get the frame accurately placed. I would like to use the Silverfast for this, but the Epson Scan is more reliable in registering the 12 frames, without chopping off parts of the photos in the final scan. Any solution would be appreciated.

Dear Martin
Unfortunately, I have not been able to work out how to send images with replies, so I have not been able to post the screen shots. If you have a public email address, I can send them as email attachements.
