Poor Quality Scans - Mac OS SF 8.1.1 R41

I am getting some really poor scans when scanning 126 format film on an Epson 4990 Scanner with the following settings:

SRD Detection Level 16, Defect Size 3
Resolution 2400 DPI

The attached images appear to be very grainy and of very poor quality. Please advise.

Dear Stephen,

Is it possible you are actually seeing the film grain?
Above a certain resolution it is possible to see the film structure (the grain).
This depends on the film being scanned.
