Paint Shop Pro 7 and multi-plane TIFFs from Silverfast

G'day,
Can somebody please help out with a solution to this frustrating problem.
I have just started using Silverfast SE Plus with a Nikon Coolscan III. When I save the image as a TIFF file, PSP is unable to open it, giving the message "Multi-plane TIFFs are not supported". What is going on? How can I get around this problem?

Dear AustrAlien

as Paint Shop Pro seems limited in its ability to understand TIFF format fully, and you do not seem to be also a user of the SilverFast HDR/DCPro products, you cannot make much use of the HiRePP feature of SilverFast.

Therefore you can safely disable HiRePP in the > Options dialogue on the > Special tab.

Scans performed with HiRePP disabled will not pose the same problem for Jasc's PSP.

Dear Sonny,
Thankyou for your prompt reply. It did sound hopefull too. Unfortunately, your suggestion did not work. I disabled HiRePP as you suggested, and then scanned and saved as TIFF, only to get the same message when PSP tried to open the TIFF file.
I did install Silverfast to operate as a stand-alone application. I am thinking at this stage that perhaps I will have to un-install Silverfast and then re-install it as a "TWAIN 32". Hopefully then, I could use PSP, to save the file as TIFF, or any of the other file formats that PSP offers.

Out of curiosity, are you able to open these files in an application other than PSP?

That's a good question. But do I have another program that will open TIFF files? I don't think I do. Aside from Microsoft's Paint, PSP7 is the only grapics program that I have.

I was just looking on Corel's web site to see if I could find out what file formats are supported by PSP, but they do not seem to have any support information for PSP 7. They do seem to have a trial for their current version and it appears you can upgrade for $55USD.

PSP7 supports a big mob of file types, (most ???everything by the look of it), including TIFF. of course (and excepting "multi-plane TIFF", of course!).

The question is, does the new version of PSP support "multi-plane TIFF"? I think the trial version will answer that question for you, right?

Dear users

I don't have PSP7 available. I tried to download and install the latest Corel (no longer Jasc) Paint Shop Pro X 10.00, but just wasted my time, wouldn't run on my system for whatever reason.

Please note that Paint Shop Pro had an irregular TWAIN interface up to version 8 that was corrected in the 8.10 update.
Therefore only PSP 8.10 and higher are considered to be compatible with SilverFast.

It seems like trying the new version might be a good idea since the trial is free. If it works for you then buy the upgrade.

Thankyou kindly for your input on my little problem. Even though we did not un-earth the exact reason for, or nature of, the apparent incompatability, I made the decision to try and go around the problem. It seemed (like a good idea at the time) the most sensible course of action to try first: And it would seem that it has paid off - for the time being. (just lucky by the sound of your comments, Sonny!)

Sonny, (sorry about you wasting your time with PSP X!) notwithstanding your advice to the contrary, I did install the TWAIN module of Silverfast, and am using using it with Paint Shop Pro 7, and the Nikon Coolscan III to scan slides, saving into PSP. So far, so good. All seems to be working as it should, (though I still have a lot to learn about Silverfast yet!)and I can save to any file format available in PSP7 (including TIFF). I am trying not to get too confident that all is well, but at least it looks hopeful.

So far, the only hiccup that I've noticed was trying to use the multi-scan feature - PSP7 refused to save files generated that way ("not supported").

Thankyou, RAG, for your input. It may yet pay dividends to upgrade PSP, and as your say, I can always try the trial version first, before buying. Hey, that's how I came to buy Silverfast SE 6 after-all! Even though my Nikon software is the latest (and it's wonderful too), it's still a "dogs breakfast" to use.

that's an interesting observation. I shall ask testing center staff if there's an older Paint Shop Pro available and have them testing with and without multi-sampling.

More obs.......
1. Using Normal (file), still can't save as TIFF file, because I still can't use PSP7 to open them ( no big deal, don't want to use Normal (file) anyway)
2. Tried to change the "Colour Filter" setting from "White" and it crashed my computer .... again, no big deal, I just won't do that again in a hurry.
3. There have been a couple of very minor other instances of "strange" behaviour, but no problems to cause any concern .... and I have been giving the software and hardware a good workout for the past couple of days. Bewdy mate!

I may well change up to a later Paint Shop Pro version, but for now all is well using PSP7, and I'm enjoying learning and seeing my old slides in a new light. Gobsmacked!

I am saving files as TIFF, after doing all the work that I can to get them at their best with Silverfast. I can then work on them later if I wish using Paint Shop Pro. or just save also as JPEGs to use in a "slide show".
