Hi!

I've been scanning negatives with the demo version of Silverfast AI 5.5. Everything worked fine and it also looks good, but I can't seem to find the function that automatically makes thumbnails from my negatives. At http://www.computer-darkroom.com there is a tutorial (No. 3) where it says that you should press a button and the "overview" window would appear. The button looks like a bunch of small thumbnails. There you are supposed to be able to make thumbnail previews. However, I have been unable to find such a button anywhere. Please help. I am using an Epson Perfection 1240U on Windows XP.

Thanks,

Martin

You can only overview images (plural) if using a film/slide loader. That is to say a device that can "hold" more than one image but can only preview/edit one at a time. Given that the Epson 1240 is a flatbed with a tranny hood it is unlikely and unecessary for an overview button to be provided. You can easily set X number of negs on the scanner, create a unique "frame" with edits for each and then scan each individually. This is shown in the user manual - Page 53.

Thanks for the response,

but that is exactly what I don't want to do. You see, my transparency adapter can scan up to 4 frames at once. And the Epson Twain automatically detects the individual frames and displays them as thumbnails. I don't have to make any selection boxes. Now I know that I can save selections in Silverfast for future use, but this is not totally accurate, since I have to insert the slides manually into the adapter and their position varies each time.

If you are using the adapter/film holder, and you press the adapter against the inner wall of the scanner's prescan area, then the slides will be in the exact location every time you prescan, regardless of how many times you change them. (Of course as long as you keep the holder against the inner wall, basically like a reference point).

not necessarily, since I have to slide the negatives manually into the adapter and there is always a margin as to where I position the slides. I can still try to line up the border of one frame with the border of the adapter, though that is also not completely accurate. It would still be much nicer to have a built in automatic thumbnail function, like the Epson Twain. I hope this will be included in the next upgrade.
