Orange lines across image

Postby Moberg Archive » Tue Jan 27, 2015 11:14 am

Hello I am experiencing an increasing problem with horizontal orange lines on slide scans. They appear in the prescan and then appear in the final scan in a different place. When I rescan they either disappear or reappear in a different area of the image. The lines can be thin and uniform or irregular but always horizontal. Yesterday this was happening with nearly every second scan.
Has anyone any solutions? I have reinstalled the software for Silverfast and for the scanner.
I operate it in workflow pilot mode using only the multi exposure feature scanning at 2400dpi.
Is there an expected life for the machine? 5,500 slides have been scanned and the machine is around 2 years old.
thank you

Dear customer,

Can you provide an image of the issue?

It sounds like it most likely is caused by a hardware issue.

But also check if maybe a fluorescent light is attached to the same power cord.
That can also cause issues.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Dear customer,

The lines seem to be in the same position in every scan.
What kind of scanner are you using?

It is very unlikely that this is somehow software related.
Such lines could be caused by dirt on the sensor or lamp.

Or it could be a temperature related issue.

You wrote they do not appear in every scan.
Is it possible they are not visible in other images due to the image content?
If the issue only occurs sporadic a sensor malfunction is possible.
But depending on the device you are using it could also be caused by a wrong sensor calibration.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Thank you Arne
We are using a Plustek scanner.
The lines are not always in the same position and are not always uniform - sometimes being much thicker and ragged at one end of the line.
We use the slide provided to recalibrate the scanner.
We have had the tech department here at the archives have a look and they suggested that we plug it directly into the mains socket (and not in to a bank of plug sockets).
In the past two weeks since doing this we have not had an issue with the lines.
Whether this is due to be plugged in to the mains or whether this is due to the scanner being moved and perhaps something being dislodged from the sensor I can't be sure.
Certainly the fault was very sporadic and not consistent even if you scanned the same slide twice.
Regards

Dear customer,

It sounds like this was caused by an electrical issue.
Scanning devices are sensitive in that area.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
