Silverfast Ai Studio (and other versions) has a SRD function based on algorithms rather than the usual infrared techniques ICE uses.
However, the algorithm version of SRD is sometimes a little bit annoying as it seems to be rather time-consuming.
So I use the iSRD function which takes advantage of the infrared scanning capability of my scanner (as I did with other software before).
But to my surprise the iSRD funtction seems to be somewhat worried in identifying and removing dust or scratch defects in the scanned picture, or it does so too furiously, depending on the Auto-slider setting. It seems as I do not succeed in obtaining a setting whch removes all or most of the defects while conserving the picture edges, namely of darker areas.
If the iSRD function ist set to remove almost all defects (as seen in preview mode), it will damage the sharp edges of high contrast, so that a former straight line becomes frayed and "washed out". Due to this, the former sharp picture seems to be unsharp at all.
Does anyone know how iSRD can be made to perform as satisfyingly as ICE does?

Dear asto999
basically i/SRD is three tools in one:
(1) removal of image defects with help of infrared scan
(2) removal of distributed image defects with help of user settings
(3) removal of longish image defects with help of user settings
Parts (2) and (3) will invariably need intelligent user decision to be fully effective. However, they can be used with every image, even when an infrared scan will invariably fail (e.g. scanning b/w film material).
The iSRD tool (1) is somewhat similar to ICE or FARE, but additionally to the auto mode lets the user have a greater influence about how the image defect information obtained by the infrared scan will be used to elimate those defects.
Thus results should at least be identical, if not superior to comparative technologies.
Detailed information on usage is provided in the iSRD / SRD Addendum (PDF, 3.9 MBytes).

Hi, thanks for your answers.
LSI_Noack:
Actually, I DO understand how iSRD and SRD work. The problem is that I find usual defect (eg fine dust) will not be removed using iSRD in SilverFast as it is - for example - with CyberView which was shipped with my scanner. Thats a shame, because Silverfast s the far better scanning application, in particular with respect to colour. In CyberView, you have no chance to set or to modify any settings, you can simply swith the ICE3 function on or off, and switched on, ICE3 will work on its own. The colour rendition is not the best, but ICE3 works fine and does not affect picture sharpness.
Kul: I use a Reflecta RPS 7200 (which is a kind of PIE product, originally). The infrared-based dust removal works fine with that scanner when I am using the originally shipped CyberView application, which uses ICE3.

Also with the Plustek 7200i -
I agree with the other posters-Something is not Right.
The latest software revisions seems to do very little to mask scratches even with the settings as high as possible. (I have been scanning with colour negs)
These scratches are clearly visable as dark lines, if I switch to view the IR mask.
The original lasersoft software revision with the scanner , (2005 ish) seemed to work a lot better, yet it will not work properly when I try to re-install the older software.
All in all the IR scratch removal tool seems to be dissapointing, to what it should be able to acheive.
Also in my case, the IR mask is always slightly misaligned with the colour scan and so the scratches are not properly 100% identified. -
Maybe it would be possible to add 2 more slider controls to manually adjust the IR mask over the colour scan if there is a misalignment.
I don't know if this is possible BUT:
An ability to work on the IR mask directly with the scratch removal preview in a way that could let the user enhance the areas of the mask that should be the most aggressive in operation , may be a solution.

Dear users of versions with iSRD functionality
please don't think I implied that we're done with optimising iSRD.
Quite on the contrary. The freshly released 6.4.4r7 again had been optimised in this respect. Be assured that we will do further qualitative tests here, especially with the Plustek 7200i, and Reflecta Crystalscan 7200 and Digitdia 4000 to compare with ICE there.
Issues often arise due to a lack of clear contrast detail in the infrared picture, and sometimes different firmware in the scanner models present different infrared pictures. Please checkout the 6.4.4r7 (especially r7a/b releases when available online) and comment on your findings.
Thank you very much in advance for your valuable insights :D

Thanks for the feedback given.
I just dowloaded the 6.4.4.r7 software and will try it this evening. As the other postings said: The scratches or the dirt particles are clearly visible in the preview, but not removed to my satisfaction. So, Silverfast actually DOES recognize faulty parts in the image, but does not remove them. Or, if it removes them, then it shatters the sharp edges and therefore contrast of the image.
Ok, so let's see what has happend with 6.4.4r7.
BTW: I am using a Reflecta RPS 7200 Professional, not a Crystal Scan 7200 (that's a different machine, I suppose).

Problem is still there
Hello,
I also have a Reflecta RPS 7200 film scanner and Silverfast Ai, version 6.4.4r7. The problem ist still there. I tried it with negative film (Fuji Reala 100 and other brands).
The edges in the sacanned image are completely destroyed when iSRD is switched on. If I use CyberView that was provided with the scanner, ICE works fine and does not create such artefacts.
Please provide a fix for it in the near future, otherwise Silverfast is completely unusable for me, because some of the negative films have some unremovable spots and scratches. I intentionally bought a scanner with ICE, to make maximum use of it.
Is there an older version of Silverfast for the Reflecta RPS 7200 without these problems, that could be used in the meantime?
Best regards and many thanks in advance
Ronny

Scan quits or destroys photo
I use Ai with Plustek 7200i. If I use iRDS all goes well till it comes to removing dust etc. It stops half way through and says it has to quit. It generates a lengthy report but I cannot copy it to send it anywhere for explanation.
On the rare occasions when it works it half covers the photo with green/blue/black triangles ruining the photo.
Any suggestions welcome.
Does Ice Technology software work with this scanner?
