Extraneous TIFF pixel information embedded in SilverFast 8

I have encountered this issue using SilverFast 8.0.1 r11 (May 23 2012) c8578ee 23.05 for the Epson 10000XL. It may be present in other versions of 8 for other scanners as well, but I have not yet had opportunity to investigate thoroughly. I have not encountered it in pre-8 versions.

The problem only became apparent when I was importing scanned TIFFs into ABBYY FineReader for OCR purposes. When doing so, in roughly 75% of the cases, ABBY read the scan as two separate but duplicate pages, one at the scanned resolution and one at a different, lower resolution in the range of about 50% to 90% of the original (e.g., files scanned at 900 ppi often have the second image at 468 ppi; files scanned at 300 ppi often have the second image at 224-230 ppi.)

When opened in Photoshop and Acrobat, the images do not show as having multiple layers or pages, however when I checked the file sizes, those which ABBYY indicates as having an additional page DO have an increased file size over those which do not have the additional image, and this file size increase appears to be directly congruent to the amount of pixel data that would be contained in a TIFF of the size that ABBYY indicates. For instance, those files scanned at 300 ppi in which there is no addtional image average approximately 25MB in size; those for which ABBYY indicates there is an addtional image average 35MB.

If the offending images are opened in Photoshop and re-saved, the additional image is removed, and the file sizes return to normal.

All of the images were scanned using 48 bit -> 24 bit color mode using the same frame and without changing any settings for that frame other than resizing it.

As I've said, I've only just begun to note the issue and have not looked carefully at the pixel data contained in the images, yet. However I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar or if the folks at LaserSoft might have some insight.

Dear customer,

The second image is used to allow faster loading of the images.
Photoshop can not handle multi-layer Tiff files and therefor does not show the image.

So I assume that these are not a tag-embedded layers (which Photoshop does render,) but one the older layer/page specs. No multi-page viewer which I've tried seems to identify them, so I'm guessing they aren't pages, either.

Is there a way to disable this behavior? It is not of use to me in my workflow, and is actually interfering with it. It also appears to be adding (sometimes significant) post-scan processing time prior to saving in the instances where it does occurs (which still seems unpredictable.)

Those are standard multi Layer Tiffs.

Photoshop just can not handle multi-layer tiffs at all.
It only supports multi layer in it's own formats.
