Colorspace - Studio not displaying ProPhoto on AdobeRGB monitor

Postby BJB » Sat Jul 16, 2016 3:48 pm

I have read everything I can on color space settings for Silverfast. I was very comfortable with the Photoshop and Lightroom colorspace setting and logic and have tried to translate that to Studio and HDR. I scan in 64 bit archive mode with the iSRD channel.

Here is my issue after using Silverfast for several months.

Although I have Studio "internal" set to ProPhoto, I am convinced that if I display Studio on my Adobe RGB monitor (which is calibrated and displays correctly for Lightroom and Photoshop), my prescan and completed scans do not display correctly ProPhoto colorspace. Now if all I want to do is scan to archive and ignore what I am seeing until I open in HDR perhaps that is fine, but it is jarring to be staring at a scan where a red tent pops off the screen (which is indicative of an sRGB image translation being displayed on an AdobeRGB monitor. It is jarring because then when I open up the archive scan TIFF file in HDR, and once I process it and double click on it.....THEN it appears to display correctly as ProPhotoRGB on my Adobe RGB monitor. And I am not even adjusting any tint or colors. And this FINAL display of the image is how it looks in lightroom once I export from HDR as a TIFF. And a few times when I have wanted to do a quick "non-archive scan" and adjust on the go with Studio it is an issue.

In the interim I have taken to using Studio on my sRGB monitor and HDR on my Adobe RGB monitor. Not ideal.

My question is....if I have colorspace set correctly, why can't my Studio preview, completed scan, HDR preview, HDR double click display, and HDR display after processing all display correctly in the Adobe RGB colorspace? I understand previews might have less resolution, however they should display in the right colorspace.

Hopefully there is just setting somewhere that I have incorrect.
Thanks,
BJB

Dear BJB,

The HDRi RAW formats are unchanged archive formats for later processing in SilverFast HDR Studio.
These images are saved completely unchanged (including color rendering) and remain in the original color space of the scanner.

For normal color rendering you have to select an 48 (Ai Studio only) or 48-> 24 Bit output.

Kind regards,
Arne

Thanks for the help, I am getting there!
So my scanner is a Plextor 8200ai. Can you confirm its colorspace?

I understand that the data is in HDRi RAW format(I'll just call it RAW :D )...but here is what I am trying to understand. I am telling Studio to display whatever it is displaying in the ProPhoto colorspace. So assuming the colorspace of my scanner is larger than sRGB, I would expect it to display what it could within the Prophoto space in Studio. Or does it just SAVE the data in the colorspace of the scanner (which of course makes sense for a RAW file) but what colorspace is that image displayed in in Studio? Not unlike Photoshop which can display a RAW file in either sRGB or ProPhoto depending on what colorspace you choose. But I think you are saying Studio cannot. But if I chose to do a quick scan, and chose a lower bit quality, it WOULD display correctly so I could make my Studio quick edits without using HDR?

Your second comment that I have to select 48 in Ai Studio or 48>24 needs some clarification. If I understand what you are telling me....if I scan to archive, I can't display that image in the correct colorspace in studio. But if I open that in HDR, surely it is going to display that RAW file in ProPhoto if I double click on the raw file and it opens in the main window and I make my adjustments in HDR? Perhaps that whole sentence applies to Studio. Sorry for the confusion.

So if that is the case, in Studio, I cannot display HDRiRAW files in Prophoto but if I double click in HDR, I can. I still would like the preview in HDR to also display in the correct colorspace if possible.

Thanks again,

BJB

Dear BJB,

Only the image is saved unchanged using the scanner colorspace. The display in SilverFast uses the set target (internal) colorspace to display the image.
I was only referring to the saved file not the Display in of the image data in SilverFast.

Kind regards,
