48-bit Mode Disappeared

Postby mrenda » Mon Nov 05, 2007 3:10 pm

I'm not having any luck getting a response to my post in the Nikon Film Scanner forum on this web site, so I thought I'd try this one.

Just started scanning negatives on my Nikon LS-50 Film Scanner. I completed about 10 scans in 48-bit mode and thought I'd try 48-bit HDR mode.

I didn't like the results, so I tried to switch back to 48-bit mode. However, 48-bit mode is now grayed out on the 'Scan Type' drop-down list, as is 16-bit Grayscale.

I know it was there before - I have several RGB/16 files of previously scanned negatives.

I'm using Silverfast SE Plus, 6.5.5r1 Mac OS X.

How can I get those options back?

Mike

Dear mrenda

16 bits per colour channel (48 bits total) is a feature of SilverFast Ai.
SilverFast SE will only feature the "HDR" modes, which are radically different in a way that they are intended to produce "raw" scans which subsequently will undergo image optimisation in SilverFast HDR (or DCPro, for that matter), instead of the SilverFast scanning piece of software.

The Solution

Postby mrenda » Tue Dec 04, 2007 7:29 pm

So, here's what happened.

I installed the SilverFast Ai demo and tried it (in 48-bit mode).

I purchased SilverFast SE. When SilverFast SE started up, it was in 48-bit mode (apparently a remnant from the Ai demo) and I was able to scan using 48-bit mode. But, as soon as I used the mode drop-down list, the 48-bit mode option was greyed out and I was no longer able to select it.

I'm not sure if that was a feature or a bug, but there it is.
