Web site disintegrated

Postby nmoss » Tue Sep 17, 2002 7:31 pm

I think the web site has collapsed in on itself, unless there is an incompatability with Netscape 4.8.

To follow up on the problem, it looks like Netscape 4.8 with Windows XP cannot display the LaserSoft web site. The discussion Forums are fine but all the rest is reduced to single lines of text separated by gray horizontal lines. Maybe it is a problem with my system but all other sites I have tested display normally so it looks like something unusual in the Lasersoft site style.

Dear nmoss,

several versions of Netscape browsers do not render HTML 'DIV' tags properly, please update your browser. However you should now see no grey lines.

hi Liudas

It's working again. As you say, no more gray lines and also the correct layout.
The suggestion to update my Netscape browser is pretty funny as this problem occurred immediately after I updated to 4.8, which is the most recent in the 4.X series. Also, your site was the only one of all that I have visited in the last 3 days that was fouled up. So, you fixed it!

Very good

hi NMoss,

actually I only removed the pulldown menus for some particular browsers which do not support them. It may in turn have 'corrected' the layout :)

Hi Liudas,

You did it again. The site is totally wrecked on my XP with Netscape 4.8!

nmoss, sorry, but your browser is outdated and cannot render HTML correctly :( Please install a newest one - we will all benefit :) (I just noticed there's NN 7 out there!)

OTH, assuming that we should adapt to every (almost) possible user browser, we have a choice here either to display wrong for elder ones or in another way wrong for newer ones, which are majority. And since phpBB software is customizable, but in a tedious way, so basically it is best to leave as it is now.

Hi Luidas,

Could it be that LSI is so far ahead of the curve that they are the only site on the web that doesn't support the only decent version of Netscape?

You know......i think you can install and have two versions of Netscape running at the same time......just use different install directories......

Actually, i tend to agree about the 4.x series. Seemed to be faster and fewer bugs.

NS 6 hasn't been too painful yet.

BTW, i think there is a particular problem with 4.8 and some web sites.

Best 'o Luck,

Frank

nmoss, Netscape 4.x does not render HTML <DIV> elements correctly which are approved by W3.org and their HTML validator accepts the page. What do we do?

Netscape 6 and 7 work fine

Postby Mike Pearson » Wed Oct 16, 2002 11:06 am

I have been using the latest versions of netscape 6 and now 7 with no problems. All the LaserSoft sites including the forum have no problems with Netscape 7.0 which is by far Netscape's best browser yet. :P

I think Netscape screwed themselves when they went with the layer and ilayer tags in the 4 series then abandoned them in the 6 and 7 series. I can't use those newer browsers in my applications as some of the dynamic actions won't work any more. Even though IE works fine I will resist using it for general applications for as long as possible. That might not be very long though and don't bank on N 6 and 7 providing much competition for IE. and I suspect more and more applications will assume that there is only one browser out there and eventually the Great Gatesby will come up with the coup de gras that will make that a reality.
