using GANE in combination with USM tool possible?

Postby grischa » Wed Sep 11, 2002 2:53 am

Since the Ai 6's new GANE tool is located in the Sharpening pull-down menu I was wondering if both tools can be used together when scanning images?
Thanks

Grischa

No, not yet.
Sharpening will decrease the quality of GANE. For the future, however, we are planing to support GANE and USM at the same time.

Dear Eric,
does it mean that it's generally not advisable (even in Photoshop) to sharpen a "GAINed" scan?

I lately experimented using the new GAIN tool to reduce grain aliasing while scanning negatives (b/w & color):
Though I noticed that some images with high-contrast areas showed some highligting and strange colorisation of pixels after GAINing them it helped reducing grain. Nevertheless the inability to use the USM tool with GAIN resulted in a seemingly unsharp and somehow flat (reduced contrast) appearance of my negative scans.
Photoshop's USM did not do the trick, so I turned to the High-pass tool, which helped to get contast and sharpness back.
Another way in reducing grain in negative scans is Silverfast's USM and the Descreening tool.
However either way still does not get me on par with printing pictures the "old-way" in a lab.
I wonder if a combination of the otherwise great GAIN tool with SF's NegaFix, USM and Descreening tool while scanning in high res. can to the seemingly impossible: get decent scans from our negs??? :o

GANE + Sharpness

Postby Guest » Wed Sep 11, 2002 10:26 pm

Dear Grischa,
the problem is, that a "General" Sharpness will amplify exactly the Grain & Noise that GANE just got rid off ...

Nevertheless we have a Sharpness that is adjusted to work satisfying with GANE, expect updates in one of the next releases ...

Until then, may try Photoshop USM with a high Threshold and small radius, that is not too bad ...

Has there been any development regarding the use of USM and GANE simultaneously?

Sorry for bothering with the same question again.
Are there any news resp. developments concerning usage of USM together with GANE?

There had been a statement concerning this topic from Aug. 2003: "As soon as possible".

I just want to know, if there is a chance to get this feature in the near future. I intend to scan my library of color slides and I don't want to do so just "5 minutes" before release of this feature.

Currently we working on all filters, to optimize them. We also watch for this request, that you could use USM and Gane together.
But I can't tell any dates, sorry.

kind regards
