Silverfast v6.6.0r4c and Photoshop CS3 hang

Postby callart » Mon Jan 26, 2009 6:46 pm

I am using an Intel Mac Pro with OS v10.5.6, Photoshop CS3, and Silverfast Ai Studio v6.6.0r4c. I am scanning with an Epson 1640XL scanner I have had a terrible time trying to scan from Photoshop. I may get a scan or two before both programs hang. I then have to force quit both programs and re-start the computer.
This problem began when I moved up from 10.4.11 to 10.5. I can't recall what version of Silverfast I was on at that time. I upgraded to v6.6.0r4c hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't.
I have been using Silverfast for years and have been very happy with your software. I hope you can suggest an easy fix that will allow me to be happy with it again.
Thanks.

Dear Greg,

could it be possilbe that you have some plugin from Nik Software installed.

we discovered a conflict with Photoshop CS3 and SilverFast in combination with NIK Softwares Plugins.
This problem will result in crashing SilverFast and Photoshop after the endscan. We have investigated this behavior and we are working on a solution together with NIK. For the moment we can give you a workaround for this problem.
You would need to remove the NIK plugins form your Photoshop CS3 Plugin directory. Just copy it somewhere else. Now you need to create an alias of the .plugin file and drag it back to the Photoshop CS3 plugin folder. Now everything should work again

Dear Thomas,
Thank you for your suggestion, however I could find no Nik software in my system and yet Silverfast and Photoshop refuse to work together. This is becoming quite a problem for me as you might imagine.
Thanks.

Best,

Greg

Dear Thomas,
Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately there is no Nik plugins to be removed, and the problem persists. I am able to use Silverfast alone to scan, as long as photoshop is turned off, but am much more accustomed to scanning from Photoshop. Is it possibly a conflict with CS3 that upgrading to CS4 would erase?
Thanks.

Best,

Greg

Dear Greg,

very weired indeed, please contact support so we can sort this out more effectively.
I doubt that a upgrade to CS4 would help as I think the problem is located somewhere else.

I've had the same problem since I upgraded to 10.5. More then 7 months ago. I was looking into getting the recent version 6.6.0r4c and as I downloaded the demo I noticed similar behavior, If I'm lucky I get 2 scans then the only way to get my Epson Perfection 3200 recognized is to restart the system, relaunching the Finder does the trick some times. In Photophop CS4 silverfast will quit by itself at times, and I have to force quit photoshop, other times it can't detect the scanner at all. The same thing happens if I launch silverfast directly from the app folder. As previously mentioned on one of the post, I too believe that the issue is not Photoshop related. I just reinstall the entire system and the only photo editing software I have on my machine is photoshop, no plug-ins, nor anything else fancy.

I was in contact with Epson and I was told very clearly that is not their problem. The scanner works fine on my laptop that is running on 10.4.9 Photoshop cs2 with Silverfast.

Is there a work around so that I get to scan from Photoshop without getting the crashes, hanging of the software, or undetected scanner?

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Dear chez,

please note that SilverFast works with Leopard from version 6.5.5r2.

When you had a SilverFast Version 6.4.x on your Mac please delete the prefs if you have not done it yet.
I would advise you to contact our support directly so we could sort the issue out more effectively.

I have the same problem here:
- Mac OS X 10.5.6 with updates till yesterday
- Creative Suite CS4 Design Premium
- latest Silverfast 6.6 AI (suppose 6.6.0r4c)

Scanning within Photoshop works several times, but then Silverfast crashes in the process after pressing the scan button between the initialise and scanning window - the progress window of silverfast just disappears and never comes back - process is still running. The scanner (Microtek i900) is not doing anything till a reboot. If you don´t save every photoshop file in advance it´s hard to get CS4 back responding.

Any ideas? NIK plugin should not be installed - it´s a CS4 installation out of the box without any additional plugins. Can there be a problem with other peripherals like a canon printer (all in one printer) or a wacom tablet (intuos3)?

Dear Mr. Luebker,
I´ll check on the current Version - I think I already installed the latest version (was a bit late), but now I´m not sure anymore. As I do not sit in front of the MAC right now - I´ll check on that asap. I updated every driver yesterday - including Silverfast, Wacom, MacOS, CS4. There were slight improvements after that: before I could not scan over 200dpi without crash and now I can scan up to 3200dpi. I also deleted the old prefs file. But it did not solve the problem completely till now.

It sounds a bit disappointing if the Wacom can be the problem...

kind regards,
Sebastian Gerstl

Dear Mr. Gerstl,

sometimes it really could be that theses tablets are causing troubles please try it without the tablet.

Does the tablet simply need to be disconnected to eliminate conflicts or do the drivers need to be removed as well? We are having issues with Silverfast hanging in Photoshop CS4 during scans as well and both computers experiencing this have Wacom tablets attached.

the Computer should be restarted after the Tablet was disconnected.
