Silverfast Crashes Photoshop

Postby Nick Jahn » Tue Jul 11, 2006 4:55 pm

After upgrading to Silverfast Ai Studio SFE-6.4.4r3b(EpsonIT8) from SFE-6.4.2r9(EpsonIT8), when I try to do anything, Photoshop crashes. I went back to 6.4.2r9 and everything works fine again. Is there anything in the upgrade that would be worth trying to figure this out. The scanner is Epson Expression 1680 Pro, Photoshop CS on Mac OS 10.3.9 (Panther). Thanks.
Regards,

Nick Jahn

Dear Mr Jahn

if you happen to experience crashes after an update is performed, please try if resetting SilverFast won't cure the problem.

The problem might be caused by an update which couldn't overwrite all older files. With preferences left over from an older version that are in incompatible format to the updated version, sometimes strange effects happen.

SilverFast usually should read the old prefs during an update install and transform them if the prefs format has been changed. But with certain file permissions set by the operating system this cannot always be done.

However, SilverFast does provide a set of secure settings.
If it does not find a "Prefs" folder when starting up, it generates a new one with these safe values.
Thus, please delete the Prefs folder (while SF isn't running) and check whether this does improve the situation.

On a typical Mac OS X installation, the SilverFast "Prefs" folder is to be found at:
/User/[your username]/Library/Preferences/LaserSoft Imaging/SilverFast/

Hello Sonny,

Thanks for your reply. There was another update to Silverfast, ,4rf3g, after the one I was having problems with. After I installed that, there was no problem.

On another issue, why doesn't Lasersoft provide Negafix profiles for Epson scanners? It's not a big issue because I get great results with Silverfast without using profiles, but you provide them for other scanners; why not Epson? I have an Expression 1680.
Regards,

Dear Nick

what makes you say we don't? You should have Negafix profiles available in the Negafix dialogue box for your Epson 1680.
If not, there's been a problem extracting the files from the plugin. In such cases, please delete the Negafix profiles folder while SilverFast isn't running. They then will become available in most cases after a restart of SilverFast.

The "Negafix" folder on an OSX system is located at
/Users/[your username]/Library/Preferences/LaserSoft Imaging/SilverFast/

No Negafix profiles for Epson

Postby Nick Jahn » Wed Sep 06, 2006 1:31 pm

I say that because it says so on the Downloads page of your web site:
" Corrected (optimized) NegaFix Profiles, for all scanners except for Nikon Maid, Kodak, Epson, PIE"

Thanks
