Should I IT8 calibrate?

Postby Bulldoggie » Thu Sep 16, 2004 1:55 am

I typically scan photos and slides. Most of the photos are old (restoration jobs), so I usually need to make color cast and saturation adjustments. I rarely know what paper was used to make the print.

The slides I scan are almost all older Kodachrome 64 slides. Most have held their color quite well, though.

Almost all of my current photography is done using a Nikon D70 digital camera. I'm not sure how to use the Epson scanner and an IT8 target to profile the camera - or if this would be valuable.

Given this mix of scanner use, would it be worthwhile to calibrate and if so which target(s) should I use?

Kodachrome and IT8

Postby kmart » Fri Sep 17, 2004 2:26 am

I have been scanning Kodachomes for the last 6 years with AI. I use a Kodachrome IT8 profile which gives me a very close match to the original slide. B&H photo in NY has IT8 targets for Kodachrome which work very nicely.
You would need DCPro to profile your D70 and it would only be good for a constant lighting situation where the lighting does not change.

Thanks! I'll get a Kodachome IT8.
