SF crashing - Microtek 1800f

I'm using SF 645r4b on a Win XP dual processor PC with 2GB of RAM. Scanner is Microtek 1800f.

I find SF to be VERY temperamental. It will crash when I switch to another program (e.g. Firefox, Word) while SF is running. So to please SF, I don?t switch to another program and this has worked ? until now.

Today, SF scans were much darker than the preview, so I restarted SF (twice) but this made no difference.

The standard fix-all advice on this forum seems to be ?delete the SF preferences folder? ? so I did that. Now SF crashes when I attempt a preview.

Any advice? Ideally, something other than reinstall SF.
