I have just generated a scanner profile with the color mangement off. I then use the Profile Maker Pro to compare the gamut of the different profiles, both .icm and .icc, and I found that the size of the scanner profile is almost identical with that of the sRGB. Is that true then that whenever I use the scanner profile, I am actually working in same range as sRGB??? So am I actually better off specifying a color space like AdobeRGB in the first place to generate the profile??? Or is that something to do with the color management being off in Silverfast that it reverts to a smaller gamut???

you created a profile with the colormanagement off??
what color management - system, application ?
how/where did you create this profile ?
ICC and ICM is the same, which profiles did you compare ?
...size of scanner profile is same as sRGB... what scanner do you use?
(I believe this is not the case, if you had a scanner with a color distinction as small as this (sRGB) it is near the quality level of a hand-held scanning device (in fashion around 1993) - if these devices can read color at all).

I apologise for not being more specific. I scanned a Hutch Color target with the SF Ai, with the color management off, ie

Color Management:
Scanner -> Internal: NONE
Internal -> Monitor: None
Internal -> Output: RGB

Profiles for ICM:
Scanner(Transparency): NONE
Internal: NONE

Then I created a scanner profile with Gretag Macbeth's i1 Pro with i1 Match. I then use the Profile Maker Pro to do a gamut comparision with other color spaces, ie, sRGB, AdobeRGB, etc. The chart showed that the gamut of the scanner profile (scanned by SF Ai, generated with i1) is somewhat similiar to that of the sRGB.

I am using a Nikon Coolscan 8000
