Poor scans

I recently purchased the OpticFilm 7200 scanner which came with Silverfast SE. I had no problems setting it up with Silverfast but I am having trouble getting a good scan to work with in photoshop (5.5) I have tried both slides and negatives with the same result.
The pictures just seem grainy and the colors are off. I am wondering if there is something else I should be doing before I can get a good scan. I have tried scanning at all different sizes and resolutions but I end up with the same result. The slides are of excellent quality.

Any help would be appreciated.
