Settings to produce RAW files with v**s**n

Postby Gregory C » Tue Sep 03, 2002 11:47 am

Daniel,

I can email you a copy of the v**s**n Options file that I'm using to produce the RAW files. You can load these Options settings via the Load Options menu item in the File menu.

Once you have loaded the options, you should make any changes appropriate to your scanner and your own preference. For example, you might prefer to reduce the multi-sampling from my setting of 3 to 1 to further reduce the scan time.

Before you begin scanning, you will also need to check the crop position/dimensions and the output file Save locations.

To check the cropping setting;
  1. Turn Batch scanning off
  2. Choose the second or third frame in your film
  3. Preview the frame
  4. Check the crop position/dimensions
  5. Turn Batch scanning on

If you would me to email you my Options file, let me know.

The Gamma of the saved RAW files is 1.0. When you process the files via HDR, simply set the Gamma in HDR Data field (SilverFast > Options > General) to 1.0 and your Gamma Gradation to either 1.8 or 2.2 depending on your own preference. SilverFast automatically adjusts the Gamma for you when processing the files.

regards
Gregory

We have solved the problems with Jaguar. LS4000/8000 are working without a problem now with SilverFast (LS40 did anyway). New versions will be posted ASAP.

The fix isn?t dependent on the SilverFast version. It works with v5.x and v6.x.

For all of you that still hopes Nikon will come out with a fix for 10.2 so that you can run Silverfast again, this is what they sent me this morning:

"Dear Daniel:

Nikon Corporation Japan expects to release a 10.2 compliant version of
the LS-4000 driver before the end of this year."

...hmm... great... I think...

SF Ai (NikonM), SF Ai (Microtek), Jaguar 10.2.1

Postby Gregory C » Fri Oct 11, 2002 9:09 am

Daniel,

SilverFast Ai (NikonM) v6.0.1r12 basically already works with Jaguar albeit with the bugs that I have listed in the Nikon forum. I'm using the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED with Jaguar 10.2.1.

Lasersoft has shown me though that they are working to solve the bugs that I reported. I believe we'll see a very nice build of SF Ai (NikonM) soon.

As an additional note, the recently released build of SilverFast Ai (Microtek) v6.0.1r20 also works extremely well with Jaguar. In fact, it communicates with my Microtek Scanmaker 5700 much faster than v5.5 did. To top it off, I haven't found any bugs in this build so far!

regards
Gregory

OK! Please! Give it to me simpe, cause I don't really get it...

I own a 5.5 version of Silverfast Ai... And a LS4000... Can I use that with my 10.2.1 or do I have to buy the 6 upgrade? If that's so, will 5.5 work when Nikon releases the 10.2 fix?

Could someone please help with installation? I am trying to install the latest demo of Ai to test on a Pwermac with 10.2.1. I am using a Nikon LS-4000 slide scanner. I have followed one set of instructions that says to instal the Nikon (3.1.3) software first and then the Silverfast. There is the NikonM import option in Photoshop 7.01, but I get a message that no scanner attached (which it is of course). Somewhere else I read a blip by someone about NOT installing the Nikon software.

Please help. Thanks, Rick

Recommended installation

Postby Gregory C » Sat Oct 12, 2002 6:37 pm

Lasersoft has just posted SilverFast Ai (NikonM) v6.0.1r23. Download it, expand it and then follow this procedure:
  • Search for and remove every folder whose name contains SilverFast or Nikon. In particular, remove;
    • the Nikon folder from /Library/Application Support
    • the Nikon Scan folder from /Applications, and
    • the SilverFast folder from /Applications (for good measure).
  • Run the new SilverFast Ai installer.
  • Restart your Mac.
That should do it.

Gregory,

A few months ago I paid for and installed Silverfast SE for an Epson 2450. can I keep folders that Menion Epson SE?

I guess you are sayung that the Nikon 3.1.3 files are NOT necessary anywhere, regardless of other installation directions from Lasersoft?

Thanks, Rick

The Nikon Scan 3.1.3 files are NOT compatible with Jaguar. The Nikon MAID files (ie, the scanner drivers) that SilverFast v6 installs are compatible with Jaguar. That's why you need to remove the Nikon folder/s before installing the latest SilverFast Ai (NikonM) build.

From what I've seen, the Epson folders will not be replaced or removed by the SilverFast Ai (NikonM) installer so it should be safe to leave them where they are. Lasersoft should be able to confirm this.

Dear Gregory,

I really appreciate your help. But sadly I am still having the same problem. I deleted all the Nikon software via search in jaguar. I then installed the newest SF demo release r23. Still the scanner is not recognized. I did note that SF installed a NikonM folder in HD/Library/Application support/NikonM/Nikon/with Profiles andNikon MIAD MAID Modules. It also installed into user (Me)/Library/Preferences/Nikon MAID. Is it correct there rather than HD/Library/Preferences?

As you can appreciate, I want to see f this software works well before paying the rather steep price. Thanks again for your time. Rick

Try this...

Postby Gregory C » Sat Oct 12, 2002 7:53 pm

I just tried the r23 installer and found the same problem. It may be an installer bug.

This change worked for me though.
  • In Columns view, Open /Library/Application Support/NikonM.
  • Within the NikonM folder, you will see another folder called Nikon. Move the Nikon folder to the Application Support folder.
  • Trash the now-empty NikonM folder.
  • Restart your Mac.
Does this work for you?

(a few moments later...)

More to add. I just realised that the LS4K data file in my home directory was older than the one in the root directory, so I ran an experiment. I trashed the whole Nikon MAID folder from my home directory and restarted the Mac. SF App and NikonM continue to work well.

That said, I wonder if the home directory files are used by the Photoshop plugin version of SilverFast. I only use SF App, so maybe the home directory files are not needed.

Only one more thing to add. Is anyone else experiencing problems when using the APS adapter and selecting multiple images in the Overview window?

regards
Gregory
