New Leica S1 High Speed user

Postby duncan » Wed Aug 16, 2006 12:39 pm

Hi, I've bought a Leica S1 High Speed camera (new but 5 or 6 year old stock) which has 2 unopened SilverFast 4.x software disks for use with Mac OS ab V.7 ... and both the disk envelopes have additional labels:

Leica SF v. 4.2.0 on one disk ...
And ...
Leica/HDR+JM SF v.4.2.4 and Leica/HDR SF v.4.2.4 both on the second disk.

These are rather old and I dont have a means of running Mac OS 7 ... so I need to obtain more up to date Silverfast software to run on at least Mac OS 9 ... but preferably OS X 10.4

I have bought a used Power Mac G4 running OS 9.2.1 and await a disk upgrading it to OS 9.2.2 ; the Power Mac has been fitted with the Leica or Silverfast supplied SCSI PCI card.

When I access system requirements/compatibility on the Silverfast website for the Leica S1 High Speed camera there is a list of operating systems ... Mac OS9 has a PLUS sign as do all the Windows operating systems .. all the Mac OS X operating systems have a MINUS sign next to them.

Do the MINUS signs indicate that those operating systems are not usable/compatible/supported with/by Silverfast with the Leica S1 High Speed camera?

Ideally I would like to install and use OS X but there appear to be SCSI compatibility problems with OS X ... but I'm not an expert on these matters.

Can someone please confirm that if I cannot run OS X , then my best option is to stay with OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 and purchase Silverfast Ai or Ai IT8 ? And can someone confirm that Silverfast Ai Studio is not compatible with this camera and its operating system(s)?

Hope these questions make sense ... I'm new to digital photography and only experienced with film ...thus do not have the experience/confidence to choose the best OS and scanning software without a bit of help. Have to start somewhere with digital and the S1 High Speed camera appeals because of its potential quality and large file size which is ideal for the intended still life subject matter.

Thanks

Dear duncan

Do the MINUS signs indicate that those operating systems are not usable/compatible/supported with/by SilverFast

That's the idea, yes.

my best option is to stay with OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 and purchase SilverFast Ai or Ai IT8 ? And can someone confirm that SilverFast Ai Studio is not compatible with this [...] operating system?

Thing is that some features of the Studio will not work under OS 9 because of the bad memory management of that outdated OS.

Please feel free to download a demo version (from our website at: Download -> SilverFast demo.

This way you can easily assure yourself that your personal systems configuration does work before buying anything.
Thus you are able to explore all the features of SilverFast and check if it suits your needs.
