Silverfast will have to answer your question about trading versions (don't see why they wouldn't). If you do decide a new scanner is necessary, I recommend the Epson 2450, which is fast, scans at up to 2400 dpi, 48 bit color, has 3.3 DMax, negative and transparency adapters, for $399. I hear actually that Epson is discontinuing this model in favor of the 2400 which lacks the transparency adapter, though it has the adapter for negatives. Right now I'm scanning with it into Jaguar/Photoshop 7 using the Epson Twain module, available at the Epson developers' website, until I'm able to update to a correct version of Silverfast Ai 6.
