How to select IT8 calibration targets

Postby sjprg » Mon Mar 23, 2009 4:36 am

I am using an Eppson 4990 Scanner and AI Studio 6.6.0R4C and I wish to scan in several hundred old slides and negatives from the mid 1960s. I have no idea as to the type of film these were created with, so my question is. How do I select a target?

Dear Customer,
if we are not talking about Kodachrome here.
You got the choices Kodak Ektachrome Professional or Fuji Provia both batch and individual measured the profiles. You can create good transparency targets for all kinds of film with either target but in general it is a litle more accurate to use a Kodak target when mainly scanning Kodak and the other way around.
For reflective calibration you would also need reflective targets.

I am sorry, but I really can't follow your calibration tutorial, handouts, etc... ;-)

1) In this Forum it says that for neagtives you actually need a target for films. In other docucments on your website you state that it is basically impossible to calibrate scanners for scanning films. (http://www.silverfast.com/faq/1014/en.h ... alibration)
2) Which targets would I actually need for scanning enlargements. One for each type of paper?
3) Do I need targets for b&w prints/neagtives?
4) Why don't you supply targets that may be downloaded? If the monitor and the printer are properly calibrated, shouldn't it be possible to print the targets? (Just asking because you can calibrate the printer with silverfast)
5) Is there another way to calibrate the scanner? By the way I am using a Epson V700 Photo.

Thanx for your help

Florian

Whtat this FAQ entry actually says is that you have to use NegaFix for negatives where you select an appropriate filmtype while the calibration is used when Scanning positives.

You would need one of our reflective targets if you want to scan reflective material
Florian wrote:3) Do I need targets for b&w prints/neagtives?

as stated in 1 there is no calibration used when scanning negatives.

This would not be accurate enough for a proper scanner calibration our targets are printed on film and either batch or individual measured in our Lab.

There are various ways to create ICC profiles for a Scanner that you can use in SilverFast but our built in Auto IT8 Calibration is far the most easiest and reliable one.

I hope you enjoy working with SilverFast.

Ok, Thanx.
But if I actually visit your website (https://www.silverfast.com/order/de.html) there is a big choice of targets, depending on type of film and brand. What are these targets used for?

There is no mentioning of a reflective target. Where do I have to go to get a reflexsive target?

Thanx for the help

Dear Florian,

in the german shop they are called the reflective targets are called "Auflicht" targets.
We do offer Fuji and Kodak reflective and transparency targets but they should generally work for all kinds of film or reflective media some there is just one exception which is Kodachrome Film which would need a special Kodachrome Target.
