I am not quite sure if I do understand your question correctly, so please excuse if I am going astray, and please rephrase it. TIA.

ICE is, both, a hardware based technology, and a software plugin from Applied Science Fiction (www.asf.com), which can be implemented by a given scanning software to access the scanner's hardware feature.

ICE can detect heights (= dusts) and depths (= scratches) on the image surface in a three-dimensional manner.
Thus it is usually very efficient and can identify image defects correctly. There are drawbacks, though, especially with film material with a kind of grainy surface or certain reflective properties, e.g. black and white film.

What's more, there is little possibility to influence the procedure. A scanning software already gets adjustage data delivered.

With SilverFast, SRD presents a second solution to remove image defects.
As SRD does work two dimensional, it cannot automagically decide what's an image defect and what is not.
However, it is much more flexible and provides an interface to let any scanner operator improve his or her scans, as no specific hardware is necessary.

When scanning with SilverFast, you can use either SRD or ICE (if hardware is fit for it), but not both for a given scan.
