Color cast problem

Postby Dan Collins » Sat Nov 15, 2003 8:28 pm

I'm scanning a Kodachrome transparency going through the usual steps. The image has a large area in deep shadow from which I am trying to bring out the detail. I am able to do this only after making some rather severe adjustments to the shadow section on the Gradation Curves tool. The detail does come out nicely, but in the process, some other parts of the image develop a distinct reddish cast. Attempts to elliminate it using the color cast control under the histogram seem to do no good. Is there a solution, or am I simply expecting too much? Thank you for any comments.

You could try two passes. One for the dark part of the image and one for the light part. Then blend the two in Photoshop. As far as the color shift goes, you could try to neutralize it by using selective color correction. Take a look at the movie tutorial on the gradation tool, i seem to remember something about how to attack this problem, but i may be mistaken.
