Big Problems with SF6 SE and Black

Postby hurleyp » Sat Aug 31, 2002 6:36 pm

I've just upgraded to SilverFast 6 SE (from 5.5.2) on a PIE 1800u. Most of what I scan are Kodak negatives from the 70's and 80's, both B&W and colour. SF6 is giving very poor results with black and darker regions. With B&W, the result is a black with white speckles that looks like it was created by hand. With colour, the black areas come out glare-white. Version 5.5.2 did not exhibit this problem, and handled dark regions quite well.

Is there a setting or adjustment to solve this, or is it a bug? I have to switch back to 5.5.2. :(

I guess your problem in B&W has to do with noise reduction. I made the same experiences like you when scanning B&w with ICE. My prescans were fine, but the last scan result was awful. After stopping ICE my scans were ok.

I'm not using noise reduction, other than what SE gives me by default. And the preview is just as messy as the final scan, so something is going wrong at the start.

(I'm using the TWAIN version and scanning to Corel PhotoPaint under WinXP, but the same problem appears with other imaging apps.)

1800u & Silverfast SE scan quality

Postby anishnair » Mon Sep 02, 2002 3:56 am

Hello,

I have been trying to get a single good picture from my PIE 1800u & Silverfast SE 6 from past few days with no success !!! I always get dark areas of my picture (negative scaning) turned to red, green or yellow. I have tried with each & every setting of Silverfast SE & Ai (demo) but result is same. The earlier versions never had such problem. Can anyone suggest what to do????

Anish,

You and I are having the exact same problems, so at least we aren't alone. It seems that SilverFast let this version out the door without proper testing. :-?

Hopefully a new release will be posted soon.

Hi

The last thing I expected from a company like LaserSoft is to let their customers do field testing!!! This is not good. Atleast accept that you have major bugs in release ver 6 (SFE-6.0.1r10(Pie-iSE)) and tell us when you are gonna fix it. I can tell you that I have tested atleast 100 negatives of different makes and speeds with very poor result, which used to be just fine (though I had GRAIN problems) in earlier version (SFE-5.5.2R02(PIE-ISE))

Cheers,
Anish

I have the same problem with Silfast SE 6 and the scanner Microtek Filmscan 35.

I want to scan B&W-negatives from Ilford films. With version 5.2 works everything.

Sorry for my bad english, but I'm from Germany. :D

I had the same problem in Silverfast AI 4.2.7 (Epson 1200 Photo).

You can try this:
Set the options to "no dither" and filter color "blue" -
perhaps you will get a normal b/w scan.
My version is running b/w scans that way.

Good luck!

Problem Fixed

Postby hurleyp » Wed Oct 16, 2002 1:16 pm

SilverFast has provided a fix for this problem. If you don't have it yet, contact support, and they will send you a file called saspi32u.dll to replace the buggy one included in the original installation.

Upgrading to SF6 SE

Postby Radu » Sun Oct 20, 2002 6:37 pm

I have the same problem with SF 6 SE and PIE 1800u: all dark areas are scanned as red/green artifacts. Asked for support at Silverfast and the reply came to upgrade to r14. Hello, I just downloaded the file from LaserSoft site Oct. 17. If there is a known bug, why is the file availble for download/sale anyway? I have no problem with SF5 SE and SF6 AI Demo. And I was thinking to upgrade to the full SF AI...

SilverFast SE

Postby stan » Thu Mar 06, 2003 10:53 pm

During the installation of SilverFast SE, into Windows ME, I chose TWAIN, rightly or wrongly. Later checked Start - Programs SilverFast had not loaded.

On rebooting computer got messages ?Error Starting Program ? The MSIEXEX.EXE file is missing export MSI.DLL:222 OK?
Then another message ?This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service. C:\windows\installer\c8353.msi OK?

Looked at Microsoft's Internet site but could not find Windows Installer!!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Stan,

Did/do you have a demo version of the program installed? This happened to me for weeks and it turned out that the demo didn't uninstall properly and then the retail version would not install with the same type of message you are getting. I finally fixed it by going through the registry deleting all references to Silverfast. Then it installed fine.

Thanks for taking time to consider my problem. Unfortunately I did not have a Demo previously!!
Stan.
