flatbed scanners for LaCie

LaCie Bluescan 48

I'm having a few problems with transparency scanning on the Bluescan. Reflective is of very high standard, but transparencies are very dark, even using Auto correct. Also the scans are rather on the blurry side. I've previously used a Nikon Coolscan III and an Epson flatbed, neither of which were perfect but both produced much crisper scans. I've tinkered with the USM and can improve them to a point, but still not great. I'm sure I must be doing something wrong but can't work out what.
Using Silverfast 6.1 on a G4 dual (1ghz) under OSX.2 (Jaguar).
