I've read various posts here and in the colorsync users group. To properly set Silverfast Studio Ai for scanning a Hutchcolor profile target, one person recommended using HDR mode. Another recommended 48 bit color with all the controls zeroed out and color management disabled. I've tried both, and the HDR scan comes out quite a bit darker. (In the General options, the "Gamma Gradation" is set to 2.0, with "for HDR output" unchecked).

Since opening up shadows is very important with transparencies, I would prefer to go with the 48 bit color settings, adjustments zeroed out, color management off. This does seems repeatable.

Any recommendations on what exact settings to use for a non-Silverfast profiling target? And why would the HDR come out darker?

Dear dyetrans,

Do not make your life so complicated, When you press the IT8 calibration button, SilverFast will automatically set the color management system to generate the optimal profile.
When you scan in HDR mode, SilverFast creates a completely unmodified raw file without gamma, hence they look darker or underexposed, when in reality you just have to apply the desired gamma gradation in your editing software.

I've used the Silverfast supplied IT8 target, and it works fine. Now I have a Hutchcolor profiling target I want to scan to create a scanner profile with it. We have used this very successfully with Linocolor and Newcolor software on the Tango drum scanner. Now I'm using Silverfast to run the scanner, so which of the two approaches I described would be better?

Since the calibration is not taking place with SilverFast Ai or SilverFast HDR. I would suggest you scan using 48 bit HDR to generate a 16 bit raw file and then in your editing program apply the desired gamma curve before creating your profile.
48 bit HDR will create a completely unmodified raw file where as with 48 bit color a gamma correction is applied as well as any other filter that might be automatically active. In case of a 48 bit color you might forget to turn something off and your profile will not be completely accurate.

can you help me please. I wish to make a hutch 6x7 cm target profile to use with Silverfast Ai and Nikon 9000 and do not know how to get it done. I have a silverfast ai auto it8 profile which happens very easily. How can i profile the hutch target to use with Silverfast when silverfast will not allow me to frame the target for calibration purposes ?.The pattern outlay is different for Hutch targets and Silverfast it8 targets . Is there another way to introduce a Hutch profile into the Silverfast Ai system.. My scanner is Coolscan 9000 and i am very keen to combine Hutch and Silverfast. But there is nothing wrong with the Silverfast targets ...there are fine too

Dear Matt,

The hutch targets are not IT8 conform and unfortunately can therefor not be used with our internal calibration.
You can however use an external calibration software capable of processing these targets to create an ICC/ICM profile and use that in SilverFast.
The profile can be selected in the SilverFast CMS Options as the input profile.

DO you know of any software package that is able to cope with the unusual patch pattern used by Hutch
I have Xrite and eye one display softwares and neither can cope with Hutch patterns on 6x7 cm targets. why do people make profilng awkward instead of simple

i know its not your problem but you are very knowledgeable about scanners and scanning
